You thought the Havanese were getting popular in the U.S. Take a look at this article from Canada

AKC 2008 ranked 55th most popular in 2015 24th most popular

CKC 2008 ranked 32nd most popular in 2016 6th most popular

Of course! Canadians always know what's cool before we do! Ryan Gosling, Bryan Adams, Mike Myers...and Havanese.

Not good for our breed, though!

I love Havanese, and they are perfect for me. They are NOT perfect in a lot of settings.

So true, Karen. This sweet breed requires a lot of time, commitment, and companionship. Papi would have you believe that includes a "Don't walk 5 feet away from me" style companionship.

My neighbor/dog sitter dislocated her elbow last week, and my dogs are back in doggie day care, where they haven't been for awhile. I saw a surprised to see that in the small dog room about 1/6 of the dogs are havanese, if I had to guess. I counted six today. There are quite a few in the dog park around here as well.

I like that I have a unique dog with the WOW factor. Popularity in the breed will result in more backyard breeders looking for a quick buck, dilution of the breed standards, proliferation of genetic health issues, and cross breeding to produce designer dogs like "Havapoos."

They are still relatively uncommon and unheard of in MN, thank heavens. The amount of quality show/hobby breeders is quite concentrated here, but I still get "Hava-what?" and "What is that a mix of" quite often. I think the New York apartment dweller demographic really drives up the number of litters registered.

It was bound to happen. My mom had a hard time finding a breeder 20 years ago. Her friend found a pup in the newspaper and he became one of the Eukanuba Champions! Not many puppy mills and back yard breeders back then. I'm confident the forum will stay diligent on the "what to look for in a breeder" mantra and steer people in the right direction.
