Ever heard of this Growth on tail?

Hi Everyone; Coming in from a walk last week, I thought Reilly had a sticker on his tail. I went to pull it off and to my surprise, he jumped and I realized it was not a sticker. I looked and it was coming out of his hair in his skin! I called my neighbor who has had many problems with her dog (not a hav) and she said her dog had something similar and had it removed. She said it was a "cutaneous horn". Huh????? Well I looked it up on the internet and it is called a Keratoaconthomas in the hair follicle (or cornifying Epitheliomas). I read the diagnosis, but really don't know if this is it, no pictures shown. Anyway I called the vet. My vet is now retiring and I had to see the new vet taking over. He examined Reilly and took a look. He took him in the back to get a better look at the problem and came back with a "sample". Like a small piece of hard minute substance. He said he didn't know what it is, but said it was not cancereous and told me to bring him back if it grows more. I was not a happy camper. But, I brought him home and he is fine, he doesn't touch it, lick it scratch it or bite it. It is as if it isn't there. When I wash or brush and comb him, I am careful in that areaas it is sharp and if you touch it the point is like a pointed stick. My question is has anyone heard of such a thing? What causes it? Is it herediary in Havs? If removed will it come back? I am very concerned for him.

I will ask the vet the same questions, but I am wondering if anyone knows any information pertaining to this problem? Thanks for taking the time to read this and let me know if any information is out there. In the meantime after Xmas, I have another appointment with this vet and I will let you know how it goes. I think I may get a second opinion from another vet also or a specialist to be sure. I greatly appreciate any help with this.

I do know that some animals (of many species, not just dogs) get "misplaced" cells, so they can have a malformed tooth or nail growing where it doesn't belong. It's possible that it is something like that. It's definitely not something that Havanese are known for, and unlikely to be hereditary. If you are concerned about it, for sure I'd get a second opinion from another vet, maybe one board certified in dermatology.

Karen ; Thank you so much for your information and suggestions for a specialist in dermatology. I will be going that route. Can't be too careful. As it is, he
is such a sweet lovable pet and I adore him. No trouble at all and I am just so upset about this. Reilly is one beautiful, healthy, well adjusted dog and everyone loves him. He took to specialized training wonderfully and its amazing to me how he is after his terrible beginnings. Love surely cures all..... I will add to the post when I find out more in case anyone runs into a similar problem. Again, thank you and sloppy kisses from Reilly for all the help from the forum.
