How to paper train, help!!

Ok, so Star the chug, actually avoids puppy pads, and would rather pee and poop on carpet or the hardwood floors. I have an expen on order, I am reading conflicting info on how to paper train, so please help me!!!

My pups either came paper trained or they were adults and already house broken.

Star is fine if it's not raining outside, it's when it's raining and cold, she won't go outside and use the yard.

She isn't leash trained, so when I do walk her, like I did when I first woke up today, she didn't know to pee, she just wandered around (pulls hard, doesn't walk in a straight line). She didn't mind getting wet, but she didn't do any business either.

Short info on Star, 3 y.o. chug (chihuahua pug),15 lbs, not fixed, no commands, not house broken, doesn't know how to walk on leash, was an outdoor dog for most of her life. Marks with her leg raised, so far I have only seen her do it IN my house, not outside on walks (wierd, right?), she also has really bad resource guarding issues. she is sweet, eager to please if you have a treat and she does submissive pee and poop, I think she was hit by the first owner (not the family I got her from).

please help, and TIA.

I think the ex-pen and confinement is the only way you are going to solve this at this point. You could tether her to you, but since she doesn't understand the leash, that might be uncomfortable for both of you. When you get the pen, put her bed in it, and otherwise, cover the COMPLETE floor with pee pads, so that is her only option. Praise her even time you see her going on the pads (even though she doesn't have a choice!) Over time, (and with an untrained adult dog, this may be SEVERAL weeks between) start removing pads one at a time, and see if she will preferentially potty on the pads that are left. Eventually, get it down to one or two pads. Be aware that MANY dogs, even if well trained to pads will not pee and poop on the same pad, so you may always have to have two available for her.

When she is successfully using just one or two pads in the pen, start leaving one side open when you can watch her closely. See if she will start going back to the pads on her own. If not, confine again. If she does, slowly expand the area she is allowed in and the amount of time you allow her out. Remember to only increase one this (time or distance) at a time.

At ah point, you need to decide whether you want to KEEP an indoor potty. (I would, with a small dog) If yes, you can just keep doing what you're doing... leaving her in the pen when you can't supervise her for a L-O-N-G time. (MANY MONTHS) If you want to do away with the pads, you can try slowly moving them closer to, then out the back door. But, if I remember right, you have some problems with Ollie in bad weather... In which case, keeping a pad by the back door on those days permanently might make the most sense.

Ollie doesn't like going outside when it's raining, cold or both. I tried for a couple of years to change that in him, but I gave up, and there is always a pee pad near the sliding glass door (almost always open) which goes to the backyard.

I used to be so annoyed that Ollie just wouldn't dog up and go pee or poop outside, now, I'm like, wow he's paper trained!

So, Star will always have a pee pad down, inside and available.

I crated her today, 4 hours while at work, and have been taking her outside on harness but since she doesn't know you can pee and poop on a walk, she hasn't let loose. I know she has to go, she hasn't gone since 11pm last night.

break thru though on the leash training, every time she pulls I go the opposite direction and it actually is working (didn't work on any of my other dogs). even though I walked the same two squares of sidewalk like 15x, she is starting to get it, and actually almost doing an about turn.

it's time to walk her again. did I mention it's pouring rain? Star doesn't seem to mind the rain.

How lucky you are that Ollie does not shred his pee pad by the sliding glass door! My paper shredders have never allowed me to paper train any dog.

when I fostered Benny (for HRI), I trained him to use a litter box, and I'm glad I did. Late last night , he decided he needed to go outside, but it was raining so hard, I did not want to. Instead, I poured fresh litter into the litter box, and he peed in the box right away. Phew!

I swear Oz has some hav in him, and I swear Ollie has some anatolian in him. when Oz was a puppy, him and ollie would eat or shred entire boxes of kleenex and big rolls of TP. Oz would take the entire roll, right from the bathroom on the rollie thingy. I would go to pee, and when I reached for the TP, nada. It took 3 missing kleenex boxes from the living room for me to figure out what happened to them, they left a small corner of cardboard intact, which was how I figured out they murdered it.

But Ollie has never shredded pee pads, or Oz for that matter, not sure why, but I am thankful!

Last night I walked Star once with Oz, and once with Ollie. Ollie pulls like a truck, he knows when to stop it, and as he tires from the walk he slows down. Oz is very chill, and always has stayed close to me. Star walked better with both of them, but was amazing with Ollie, I think it gave her someone to follow. I was literally speechless. she didn't pull (I was walking faster so Ollie wouldn't pull, it was raining so his top speed is slower in the rain than when the weather is nice). Really interesting.

The ex-pen came last night, so I set it up. wall to wall puppy pads. This morning, she hadn't done #1 or #2, I am curious to see how she did when I get home today.

It's raining again, and last night before I go the expen and puppy pads set up, she pee'd on the hardwood floors again, this time by the front door. She definitely doesn't like to go outside when it's raining.

OK, You've got a starting place now. Peeing on the pads would be fine, but NOT peeing on the pads could also work. Just keep her there ALL the time you can't have her outside or RIGHT with you to supervise.

Do you think she might go outside if you gave her more space with a drag line several feet long? Or since she will walk on leash when accompanied by the other dogs might she learn it's ok to go by observing the other dogs taking advantage of the walk for pottying?

She goes outside if it's not raining. when it rains she just cries by the sliding glass door.

she hasn't used the puppy pads yet, gotta go some time soon!
