Matting

Can anyone recommend a harness that doesn't cause matting? I brush Bodie daily, but the cloth harness really causes matts. Thanks!

Perhaps you could try a micro fiber harness and see how it works. Sammy doesn't have as much hair and i haven't used a harness for sometime now. I really hope you can get one that works perfectly though.

Hi Julie,

Rudy can't use any of the cloth harnesses either. I use the Easy Step-In Sport Dog Harness from Petco. Pet Supplies Plus had one similar that I also used. I think the brand name is called Coastal.

Yeah, there is no such thing as a harness that doesn't mat at all on a Havanese. What you want to find is something with as few straps as possible. I use harnesses similar to the one above (though I'm not keen on the Petco ones as it's hard to tell front from back... I THINK the ones I have are the Coastal ones) I've also heard good things about the Buddy Belt: https://www.chewy.com/s/buddy-belts?...Q&gclsrc=aw.ds

Honestly, I've given up with Panda. I use what we call the "Magic leash" at our training center. You take the leash, attach it to the collar by the clip. Run the leash under the dog, right behind his front legs, then up through the collar on the other side and to ye=our hand. With this arrangement, if they pull, it tightens around their belly, not around their neck. It is very effective helping to teach them not to pull, and doesn't damage sensitive next structures.

Does this completely eliminate matting? No. But if you use a thin cord leash, matting is minimal, and it's a "harness" that is always with you, no matter what you're doing or where you are.

Karen, I am trying to picture this as I think I will try it. When you clip on the leash to the collar ring, is the ring in front of their chest (like where tags would dangle,) or at the back of their neck by the top of the shoulders? If in front of their chest I can't figure out the leash placement around the legs. It makes more sense to me if the ring/leash is starting at the back/base of the neck. Is that right?

I use the Wonder Walker Body Halter - size: Toy. I bought it at a local pet store. I like it because the straps are thin (3/8″ webbing) so that minimizes matting. It can be hard to adjust the first time so I had someone at the pet store help me out and now there's no problem.
