the "DOWN" slide to stop

Karen has commented that Kodi sometimes slides to a stop when given the "down" cue on recall. I thought, sure!

It has been raining almost constantly here for the last couple of weeks. Yesterday afternoon, we got 4 inches of rain in 4 hours. Some localized flooding, but we are high and dry at our casa. So we have been doing all of our practicing inside the casa for the time being. We have bamboo floors in most of our house. This morning, Ricky and I were practicing our recalls from about 30 feet (we have an open floor plan). I decided to change things up a bit and gave him a "down" cue on one of his recalls. He was returning at a good clip and bam, he hit the floor when I said "down." He came skidding to a stop about 10 feet from me. But what is even more funny, he did a slow, 90 degree spin to the left as he was sliding. Momi and I looked at each other with our mouths open. And then we started laughing, so hard we had to sit down. Ricky just looked up at us, still in his obedient "down, stay" with a big mouth open, tongue hanging out "grin." I will never doubt Karen again!

I wish I had a video of this. A ray of sunshine on a rainy (or snowy) day. These Havadoggies are so much fun. I know that everyone who is owned by one, and I do mean "owned", love them so much.

Good for Ricky! That is a hard skill to learn for many dogs!

As far as the spin is concerned, that is what has happened to Kodi a couple of times, and although it's cute, I also find it terrifying because of how easily they could start to roll and potentially hurt themselves. For this reason, There are some venues where I won't show any more because of their slippery floors.
