heartworm and tick/flea control

Just wanting opinions of which heartworm and which flea/tick control medications are best for havanese or small dogs in general. Also, do most of you purchase thru vet or go online for it?

Thanks!

I use K9 Advantix II for fleas and ticks. I just purchased it from Chewy.com as they had the lowest price at the time. For Heartworm I use Heartgard Plus. I just purchased it from the Drs. Foster and Smith website. Their pharmacy will contact your vet to get the neccesary approval for the prescription. When I first got Molly I purchased everything at the vets office before I realized how much you can save by buying it online. Interceptor is also a good choice for Heartworm. I stopped using it with my last dog because they discontinued it for awhile but I used it for 13 years with no problem.

I use only Interceptor for Heartworm, give it only every 6 weeks, and only during the part of the year that they could be infected. (this varies depending on where you live) For the period of time when Interceptor wasn't made, I used Heartgard, but was nervous every time I gave it.

I use Advantix II WHEN I need it, but that's not very often. Last summer, I only treated the dogs twice, once in the spring and once in early Sept. the summer was so dry that ticks weren't much of a problem, and we hardly ever have flea problems.

Thanks for the advice. I'm taking Leo to the vet tomorrow.

I gave my Havanese K-9 Advantix and thought I had nearly killed her by her reaction. After throwing up, panting excessively I rushed to bathe her in dawn to get the awful stuff off of her. Please go to this link and scroll down to the blogs by owners exposing the awful reactions to this toxic substance. I would NEVER use this on my dog. Any vet that sells it should know better.

I forgot to mention that I gave the K-9 Advantix to a Havanese I had before Tux. Consequently, I use NO flea preventative, only Heartworm.

I use Heartgard and Frontline. I have never had any problems with either.

I used to use interceptor until they discontinued it (they have since brought it back, but not sure if it's the same ingredients). I now use Hartguard and Vectra 3-d and haven't had any problems.

There is not ANY commercial flea and tick preventative that has not had some dogs have bad reactions to them. Some VERY bad reactions. That's why we shouldn't use ANY of the cavalierly, and we should watch carefully for reactions, as you did.

But that doesn't mean that the same product is going to be bad for every dog. Kodi had a severe reaction to his last Rabies vaccine. As a result, he now has a waiver, and won't have another. And he's far from the only dog that this has happened to. But I would never suggest that no one ever get their dogs vaccinated against Rabies. My girls are both on a standard Rabies vaccination schedule. I just treat them with Lyssin and Thuja, and watch them like hawks.

Interceptor is exactly the same formula. It is just being made in a different facility. (because the old one burned down)
