18 Months, A Journey In Silver

When I started noticing lighter colors in Raffy's black coat at 16 weeks, I began really researching Havanese silvering. I devoured everything on this forum I could find on it and searched the internet for pictures of the process. In a way, I was trying to predict how his coat would change. We all know that's difficult with a lot of Havanese. His breeder fully expected him to stay black, but showed me what to look for in a pup that might change coat color. Boy, was she surprised when I brought him to see her a couple months back. Generally people see signs around the eyes and on the face at fairly young age. Because of his markings, that wasn't very noticeable on him, I guess. He is both graying (going from black to a lighter charcoal color) and silvering (white strands throughout his coat). His tail and rear-end are completely silver, as well as under his ears (but you don't see that unless you look for it). As time goes on, I wonder if his entire coat will be like his tail. But here is our journey in silver up to now.

In order they are: 16 weeks, 7 months, 15 months, and the last two are current at 18 1/2 months.

Black, silver, green, or purple, Raffy is still Top Dog in my book!

What a sweetie, Raffy is going to be gorgeous no matter what colour his coat is. My Ollie is also showing areas of charcoal and silver, but he is almost 3 and it is just a smattering. It did start showing up in his first year though.

RAffy is gorgeous either way! It is so fascinating how they change. I love that about this breed. Layla is also getting silver throughout her tail. She's turning almost a Havana brown on the rest of her body. For her first year or so, I would freak out about her white paws getting some black ticking throughout the white. Her breeder must have been really tired of me asking whether they would stay white. They haven't gotten anymore ticking for quite some time and we are happy about that :smile2. If you don't mind me asking, who was Raffys breeder? I see you're in Olympia. Also, I love that someone else puts their little cuties up on the counter! Thought it was just me.

I answered my own question. I see in your ticker they are from Grandview Havanese. My Layla's dad was from Grandview Havanese (Harmony's Louis Vuitton).

Pixel has a sister who is VERY silver, and started out with silver around her face very early. (by 6 weeks it was very obvious) When Pixel got a big silver streak in her tail, we thought she would silver more too. If you look VERY CLOSELY, you can see a white hair here or there in her coat, but she looks like a black dog with just that silver splash in her tail unless you inspect carefully. She's almost 2 now, so I suspect that what we see is what we've got.

Sometimes I think it would be interesting to find out what she has in her genetically for color, (her dam is a silver sable and her sire (same as Kodi's) is solid B&W) but since she's spayed, it seems a silly way to spend money!

Just took this pic of Truffles sitting on the back of the sofa. She was a solid dark chocolate with white paws as a puppy. Around six month old she started get white hairs on her back and she is now three years old. She still looks like a chocolate, although highlighted.

If I implied that I'm unhappy with Raffy's coat at all, that wasn't my intention. I am simply fascinated by it, as it was wholly unexpected when we got him that he would silver at all. Also, as many of you know, not cutting him down to a puppy cut during his horrible blowing coat phase, was a difficult task. I'm proud of us both for putting up with the dematting process for 6 months. Raffy knows he's gorgeous and loves to strut his stuff wherever we go. In fact, I had to stop bringing him on socialization visits with Sassy, because even though she's a puppy, he is so exuberant and such a show-off, he would steal all the attention away from her.

Oh, I don't think anyone thought that! Silver is beautiful too!
