new behavior

When we first began researching the Havanese, we learned that they are lap dogs. When we got Shama, however, we were surprised that she didn't seem to like being on our laps or being petted. Lately, however, she sits on the floor near DH in his recliner and lets him pet her! She's even started sitting near me for the treatment as well! It only took almost 21 months . . . (She also tolerates being groomed better now too.) Do you think she will one day sit on our laps?

I'm starting to believe that "lapdog" is a terrible descriptor for Havanese. They are velcro, for sure, and like to be near their people, I'm just not so sure about ON their people. Obviously different havs have different personalities, but Raffy is very much like what you describe. He likes to be next to us, but doesn't tolerate too much petting while he's in a relaxed mode. Belly rubs, and petting while playing/interacting is totally fine with him. He just doesn't like to be pet much when he's chillin'. He will get up and move elsewhere if we pet him too much. Sassy enjoys more pets and back scratches, but also isn't interested in being ON us, rather just against/or barely touching. She will also get up and move if we pet too much while she is dozing/sleeping.

This is Leo's cuddle (lap dog). Snuggled close but not necessarily on a lap. Rexy stands on our lap but doesn't lay down. I don't know if he will in time or if he'll just continue to stand on our lap.

Lola didn't want to be touched, and definitely wasn't a lap dog up until she was ten months old. Right when she went into heat, she started being a cuddler, and even would come up on my lap. I thought it would pass, but it's stayed. She's more apt to be near rather than on, but she loves being petted, especially around her ears and chin as well as the ever popular belly rub. Today, i was sitting on a bench at the dog park with a friend. No one was more surprised than I when she jumped up and put her head on my friends lap, and let her self get petted for quite awhile. Since she's always been skittish with women she doesn't know, this is a totally new thing I hope will stick around.

Every once in a while, all three of mine will want "lap time", but it isn't often and it's never for long. They all LOVE being stroked and "skritched", and all three love to cuddle AGAINST us in bed, either in the evening or in the morning. Or to lay on the couch with their heads on our laps. But, no, they are not "in your lap" dogs.

That describes Perry very well (didn't know if it was typical Hav or a product of his background). He will occassionally sit on my lap (and doesn't mind if I put him there for grooming or a quick hug), but by choice he's happier somewhere else. Sometimes that's right beside me, often it's at the end of the couch or on the floor by my feet or on the floor somewhere else in the living room (where he can see me) and if he's beside me he'll be fine with petting for a little while, but if I do 'too much' he's up and moving to where he can chill in peace.

Molly loves to lie on my lap when I am sitting in my recliner. Sometimes she prefers just to be next to me in the chair. She doesn't like to be pet too much. When she has had enough she will start licking my hand or just gets up and moves! She acts totally different with my husband. She will leave my chair and jump up on his. Then she proceeds to climb up to his chest where she will lie on her side so he can rub her tummy. She never does this behavior with me, even though I am her primary caregiver! After her tummy rub she hops back over to my lap. I think she loves me but is IN LOVE with my husband!

Loki is the very definition of lapdog. His favorite place is in my lap (Marc's is a close second). If I have a laptop, I-pad or book in my lap, if I am being nice, I will hold it over him, otherwise I make him sit next to me. His next favorite place is on one of our heads - that is on the sofa arm over our heads when we lay on the sofa. I think he is part cat. When we are both tired of him, he will lay on the end of the sofa or on the mat beside the sofa. Sometimes he will get in his crate beside my chair.

Well......Ricky is a dog with a split personality! Ricky loves to lay on Momi's lap or cuddle next to her. However, Ricky has his 4 to 6 foot rule with me. He wants to be near me but not on top of me. But when it comes to making a choice who he would rather be with, 90 per cent of the time he wants to go or be with me, even if it is 6 feet away.

Ricky is happiest when he has both of us all to himself and is an "equal opportunity dog," alternating between the two of us as HE sees fit! He knows that we both adore him and he tries to give us both attention in equal amounts. Is it possible to "spoil" a dog?
