8 Months and still going in the house

Cubby is 8 months old. He is using a crate and does not soil his crate. We are retired, so we can take him out every 3 hours or so. He never asks (that we know of), we just take him out as a routine or after play. Problem is this. For example today we went outside so I let him play in the house for about an hour thinking he was empty. Then I found a spot on carpet. Is this male marking??? He is neutered. I have a few times had to leave him in the crate for up to 5 hours or so, and he held it. Why wont he hold it inside. I am feeling very inadequate right now. I hate to have him locked up all the time!

I doubt it's marking...but I'm definitely not an expert. It just seems strange to me that a neutered 8 month old puppy would be marking.

As for potty training, you will likely have to go back to basics. I'm a firm believer in indoor options, but if you're interested in exclusively outdoor elimination, I know there are members that have trained that way successfully and will likely offer some great advice.

Whichever way you go though, I know that heaping on a ton of praise when your dog chooses the right place to go is very important.

Potty training takes as long as it takes. Every dog is different. It's unlikely that this is marking, not because of his age and being neutered (Dogs of all ages and genders can mark), but because it was a spot on the carpet. Most (not all) marking occurs on vertical surfaces.

Clearly, he cannot yet be trusted unsupervised. Take things back a couple of steps and supervise him CAREFULLY. When you decide to test him, do so on an easily cleaned floor, not somewhere with carpeting.

Incidentally, my dogs ARE all reliable, but they are NEVER left loose when we are out of the house. They re gated in my office with a litter box and a water bottle. Dogs can just get themselves in trouble too easily at large in the house. Not necessarily potting, but chewing things, knocking things over... ingesting something dangerous... I just don't like to take the chance.

Hi Carole, I know you must feel frustrated, but this "problem" is fixable.

First, you should take Cubby outside every 30 minutes, even if he went just 30 minutes ago. Take him outside and give him 2 to 3 minutes to go (it should not be playtime). If he doesn't go, take him back inside. If he does go, praise lavishly and reward with his favorite treat! REPEAT AGAIN IN 30 MINUTE INTERVALS UNTIL BEDTIME.

Second, put him in an exercise pen with a plastic tarp on the floor to make clean up of accidents easy when he is in the house. Don't give him to much freedom when he is this age and not house broken yet.

Third, he is not marking, but he is being stimulated by the smell of urine from his previous accidents in the house. Nothing makes a dog more stimulated than the smell of his urine or another dog's urine. There are products you can use that will minimize the smell of urine inside the house that you use to clean up accidents. The more he goes outside, the more he will be stimulated by previous potties outside and he will want to go there.

We live just down the road from you and we are available for some "hands on" help if desired.

Thanks for your response. Especially about the "smells" in the carpet. I use Nature's Miracle, but perhaps there are areas that missed the clean up. He does not go on hard floor, only carpet. How far away from me do you live? If you are close, I would love to have referrals for groomer and perhaps pet sitter. My email is [email protected]
