I am not quite sure what possessed me, but I just confirmed my sweet old man's entry in Beginning Nosework at our training club. First class is Saturday the 11th.

Mario hasn't been in a class-like situation since he was a couple years old. An incident with a neighbor's dog made him incredibly fearful. He is very non-reactive, he just sort of shuts down when approached with a situation in which he doesn't feel comfortable. The class is limited to just 4 dogs, and the dogs are crated unless working, so I am hoping this is an environment where he is able to gain confidence. He has always loved using his nose to hunt for treats, and now that AKC has a titling program for nosework, I felt like the timing was right.

Fingers crossed things go well for him. In the meantime, I would love to see some NW videos from those of you who have done it, if any of you have
Melissa Brill likes this.

Sophie, Nino, and Brisket (Mario too!)

Awesome!!! Nosework is GREAT for shy dogs and those that are a little tentative. I know a number of dogs who it has really brought out of their shell and increased confidence!'' We never went far enough with Pixel to get her on odor (just TOO many classes, TOO many sports, TOO much $$$!!! But here are a couple of videos from her one set of nose work classes... so similar to what Mario will start with:

In this one, you will here the instructor saying "she's not wrong..." when she leaves the search area. That's because she had picked up the scent of the treats in my black&white treat bag. The other thing that is obvious is that she's too smart! She is clearly WATCHING Michele put the hide out, and knows exactly where to go without using her nose in the second and third search. (it's interesting but not that many dogs will do that)

So... The NEXT time, I kept my back turned, so she couldn't SEE Michele putting the hides down.\, and she actually used her NOSE to find them!
