how to handle very early morning feeding

my lovely little dog is a very early riser, 5:15 a.m. not a big deal for me cuz that's when i get up as well. the problem is that after i walk him and return home, it's 6:00ish and he wants to eat his breakfast. because he eats to early by the time late afternoon arrives, he's whining for treats, etc. i treat him throughout the day he's got to loose half a pound. any tips on feeding? he gets fed 1x a day and it's dry kibble.

Dexter and Jack are awake ....wanting to potty...just before 6am....Clock work! We do not need alarm clocks around here!!!

Outside to potty....then 6am....Nap time by 8:30am...By lunch or mid-afternoon.....depending....on each afternoon....sometimes they get a dental chew, treats with training or a bone if I am desperate and want to be left alone for awhile. Sometimes they are not hungry during the day.....

Sometimes, Dexter eats his breakfast....sometimes not. If not, he will eat supper. Jack will eat two times for sure. Jack is an eating machine right now. Supper time is anywhere from 5-7pm with leftover treats from supper at 8pm.

How long has he been fed 1x a day? How much food does he eat? How many treats during the day? His he chewing on a long time bone? How much exercise does he get each day? What kind of food does he eat (a good quality food will last longer).

I am throwing questions out so people can help you answer questions. I can only offer you advice on what I know works for me.

Just so you nowo....A nice big flossie or beef tendon will consume their own afternoon and they will probably not be hungry for supper.

My 6 months old Nata still eats three times a day. At what age have you started to feed twice a day? I have heard they don't recommend these small breeds to be fed only once a day. It is better for their stomach to get small amounts twice a day rather than one big.

I would split up his meal, half in the morning and half in the afternoon. It's hard for them to go that long between meals. If you are trying to get him to lose weight, you can give him low fat healthy munchies in between his regular meals. My older Shih Tzu had to lose some weight and we had to use things like green beans, baby carrots, bananas, and low fat plain yogurt. I just started giving yogurt and they all love it. Another thing with splitting up the meals and giving low fat healthy treats during the day is that is also keeps their metabolism going and that will help them burn fat better. Harry, that's the Tzu, somtimes he will still get hungry during the mid afternoon and yesterday during lunch he had some sliced banana with a teaspoon of yogurt. Hope this helps

I feed them twice a day. Have done so ever since they stopped eating 3 times a day.
If they aren't hungry, they may skip a meal. I feed them high quality kibble. I sometimes add green beans.
I give them a few treats during the day.

I'm with Jenn. Substitute green beans, carrots, and such for the treats. I have a garden out back and Rufus is crazy for snap peas. Marley and Phoebe are holding off until the strawberries are ripe lol!

I would think that if you feed your guy breakfast at 6, it would be too hard to go the whole day on one meal. I would split his meal into two feedings and if he is hungry and will eat veggies (mine will not) I would add them.

he's been eating 1x a day for a year. he's 6 and has addisons so i had to split the feedings to a couple times a day because he was always hungry due to meds. he's off the prednison for the most part now and eats 1/2 cup 1x a day. he gets a few good treats in his kong when we leave for the day for a couple of hours. a treat or two when i groom each day. he eats californai natural...good dog food.

he cant have beef tendon cuz he's got beef allergies and he's never been big on chewing rawhides, etc. or even flossies.

when he was eating 2x a day it was never enough, he was always hungry so i went to 1x a day and he's satisfied after he eats. he won't touch carrots, bananas, green beans, etc. etc. etc. no interest at all. his treats are all natural and low cal. he loves those treats that look like packing peanuts.
