What's the proper etiquette when my friend's dog passed away...

My best friend has just decided to put her 16-year-old Shiba to sleep this coming Friday. Lucy has not been doing so well in the past few years. I have known Lucy for 14 years of her life. She is one of the main reasons why I want to get a dog. She is just the sweetest dog. I want to get something for my friend, but I don't want to do a basket or card. Is this too personal? Should it come from the dog's parents instead of me??

I think of Lucy as my niece. I try not to cry whenever I talk to my friend about her health. But, I do cry easily...sometimes with sad commercial too. (Ollie just jumped on the sofa to lean on me as if he is trying to comfort me. Could he tell I am sad?)

You wrote some beautiful things about Lucy right there is your post!
Sweetest dog. Knew her a long time. Main reason you wanted a dog.
You could write that in a card.

I did have a friend who was inconsolable when her dog passed.
It was very difficult.
I remember Henry and I had to go over there so she could have him in her lap and cuddle.

I am also sorry to hear about Lucy.

I like the keychain. The sentiment made me tear up. Do you have any photos of Lucy? I gave my best friend a captioned photo of her recently departed dog.

So sorry to hear the sad news. Personally, I don't think the memorial keychain is too personal. I agree with gelbergirl - you wrote some nice things in your post already. The kindest things people did for me when I lost my bff was hand written cards and a rainbow bridge card with a wonderful words.

I like the keychain, too. And also write your words onto a card to go along with it.

Oh, I think that is a LOVELY gift to commemorate her passing! I can't imagine your friend not treasuring it!!!

And, yes, I'm sure Ollie can tell you are sad. That's OK, comforting us is one of the things our dogs do best!

When we suddenly lost my beloved, red heeler girl, 3 years ago, my good friend gave me a necklace (similar to your keychain idea) with Lacy's name and a nice saying on it. That necklace brings me comfort and I treasure it to this day! I think the keychain is very appropriate and I agree with the others, a card with some of the personal words you've shared here would also be comforting to your friend.

Such a heartfelt thing to do for your friend ~ she will love the keychain and the thought that comes with it. When we lost our boy in January, I remember most the friends that just gave me a hug and truly seemed to mourn the loss of him right along with me. Sometimes you don't need to try the find the right words...they just come.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
