Nathan,

I am ejoying my subscription. Read the second installment yesterday. I am learning so much from the articles by Zoila and especially by Liz Vargo. Their perspectives are so interesting as they have been so long in the breed. The other articles are very good, too.

Thanks Pattie. I had the opportunity to interact and work with with Zoila Portuondo Guerra when I was helping Kitty work on the rather large articles and photo spread she did with her last year. It seemed like a natural to me to reach out to her again and she was happy to join us. She will be contributing each issue from now on and she has allot to say. As you say, Zoila's been involved with Havanese for a very long time and shares insight that is well worth reading.

Liz Vargo has been amazing. I love reading things from people that were there. This isn't second hand, filtered through someones perception, agenda, bias, or anything else but Liz deciding she had something to say and standing up and saying it. I read allot in her article I'd not known before and it really got me thinking in more than one area about the development of my own breeding habits. In particular a few of the things she said challenges the basis upon which I had been making decisions and I'll really have to take a serious look going forward. I know I'm not alone in saying the health and long term well being of our Havanese is of paramount importance to Darlah and me. Some of the information in her article did make me sit back and think. I can't wait to read what she writes next!

Thanks again Pattie.

Thanks Arlene. I think that's what I appreciate so much about articles from people such as Liz and Zoila. They were there. Personally I consider it an opportunity to learn.

Access to The Havanese Breed Magazine

Hi Karen,
I sent you a private email just now with your user id and password so you can access the magazine. Yes, it is on me. When I get notified by PayPal that I've received a payment I go straight away and create a new user id and password for you. But in your case I was already asleep last night. We are on puppy watch in that our Fiona is due. Her temperature hasn't dropped yet though. Darlah is taking her temperature 3 times a day at the moment. Darlah and I take turns making sure we get a good night's sleep in anticipation. I'm the midwife. :-)

For general informational purposes, to log in and download the magazine just go to http://www.havanesebreed.com/pdf/ and enter your USER ID and PASSWORD for the PDF version and http://www.havanesebreed.com/exe/ for the larger and fancier page flipping version that makes it look like you are reading a magazine right on your screen with a nice zoom and stuff. It only works on a PC though, which sucks. That said the PDF version is linked all over the place too in that you can select something in the Table of Contents and it will immediately jump to that article, or jump to a bio of the author, whatever you've selected.

For those thinking about subscribing but who want to see what they might be getting for their money, please select this link: http://www.havanesebreed.com/magazine-promo/ and download the 9 page Teaser which will show you the quality of the magazine as well as the first paragraph on every single one of the articles in it. There are 50 pages in the current issue and almost all of them are articles.
I hope you enjoy the read, Karen.
Thanks again for subscribing.

Another happy customer here! Great job on getting those articles, Nathan. I still haven't completely read both issues, but I really enjoyed Bill Burns' explanations of typical expenses breeders have. It's all interesting!

oh.... and thanks for the right to brag about a couple of pics in there of my boys.

GREAT MAGAZINE!

Hi Nathan,

Thank you so much for getting back to me this morning. I have successfully logged into my subscription and so far I've read 2 articles: Bill Burn's article about the cost of raising a puppy and Grace Kosub's article on "Becoming an Old Fuddy Duddy." Both articles are excellent! Bill's article was definitely a reality check for me and painful reminder of why my bank account is so low right now. As a breeder who is committed to breeding dogs of correct type, good temperament, and good health - I can tell you that I have spent a lot of money along the way in an effort to stay true to my goals. I have spent FAR MORE than I have ever re-cooped through puppy sales. Bill, great article and right on! I whole-heartedly agreed with Grace Kosub's article and think that MENTOR is a better name than Fuddy Duddy for long-time, knowledgable breeders. I am thinking of our late, beloved Sue Nelson who mentored many people in Southern California. I am one of the many people who had the good fortune of benefiting from Sue's guidance when I first started showing Havanese (2001). She taught me about the ring and how to train, groom, and feed our lovely breed. Sue was no Fuddy Duddy. She was a true MENTOR. She was one of a kind, but I know there are many other long-time breeders who have much to share and teach. I cannot imagine dismissing their knowledge as outdated or useless.

I have more comments about the magazine, but I am going to write them in another post about "pigmentation." I had an AH-HA moment as I read the AKC, CKC, AND FCI standards in the new magazine. Certainly, I have read all three standards many times before in Kitty's Our Havanese magazine, but missed something very important during all those readings. This morning, I had a pertinent question about our breed answered, one that I hope to discuss with other members of this forum.

Let me just finish now by saying THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to you, Nathan, for creating this first class magazine. After the sad loss of Kitty's Our Havanese magazine, this new magazine is like water for the thirsty Havanese-lover's soul!

Sincerely, Karen
