Trying a new food...How long do I wait?

I just started Ruffles on C&P Ultramix lamb and rice today. We ran out of Iams yesterday and I have to do a "cold turkey" switch. She usually doesn't eat that much but it seems like she's eating less of this. Maybe a 1/2 cup so far today. But this is the first day. How long should I give it before I take it back and try another flavor? C&P does have an "unconditional guarantee". Has anyone else returned food to Petco because their dog didn't like it?

Hi, if you get stuck without being able to get your regular food, you should try to find something similar. Is this similar to what you were feeding.?

I'd like the C&P to become her regular food.

That's fine but is this causing problems yet, being you switched so quick.? If not , put it down five minutes, if she doesn't eat it , pick it up and wait til her next feeding time and put it out again. She'll eat it eventually. The trouble with this situation is that it makes it difficult to tell if she gets diarrhea from the food or from the quick change. ? If her poops are good ,assume it's alright with her system.

Good idea to switch to a higher quality food as Iams isn't going to give your dog all she needs, long-term. C&P has 4 stars/6 at www.dogfoodanalysis.com so good choice! It would be normal for Ruffles to have softer stools for a day or two, but it shouldn't last much more than that before her body is used to the change. Dave's sugg'n about putting the food out for a time and then taking it away until the next meal is a good one. Ruffles will finally eat when she's hungry.

Dogfoodanalysis is where I researched all the food that Petco carries. It was the cheapest of their 4 star food. They don't carry 5 or 6 star anyway.

She never eats much at one setting. She eats a little at a time when she's hungry but she never gets over the 1 1/2 cups daily that the food recommends. She barely eats 1 cup a day but she has gained 2lbs in the first month we've had her. So that's a plus.

OK, I saw that but I didn't realize that it's a 5 star food. Thanks.

She's still picky about her new food so I'll see how today goes but when she did go potty this morning it was a little more than normal and she didn't look like she was straining as much so I know I'm on the right track as far as the quality of the food goes. Now I just have to get the right flavor.

Thanks for all the advice so far.

keep in mind it takes about 10 days to transition your dog to a new food. going cold turkey could cause belly issues etc. they need time to adjust to the new food and ingredients. i feed my dog california natural little bites lamb and rice. all pretty natural, no wheat, etc. she might not be eating the new food cuz it's too intense on her system a slower transition would be better.

From the start she wasn't that crazy about it. Sniffing it and walking away. I'm going to take it back and exchange it for another flavor in a little bit, if they'll let me.
