Tear Stains or Color Change?

Hi all --

Here's a couple of pictures of Snickers. The first one is one where she's about 3 months old. As you can see her muzzle is pretty much pure white, with just a touch of tan around the left eye.

And this is one I took just the other day - as you can see her muzzle looks considerably darker. I'm wondering if the darkening is coming from tear's (she's doing quite a bit of that at the moment as I am waiting patiently for her coat to grow out enough to adequately groom her around the eyes) Also note that her 'beard' looks like it's getting darker too...

Ideas?? She eats Wellness Holistic Small bite kibble ( with a little bit of Yogurt mixed in) in a stainless steel bowl and drinks from a ceramic bowl.

Rosie had a white muzzel as a puppy; but now it is brown. Brown across her nose and under her eyes also. I first thought it was staining. But It was just a color change. She turned brown all across her face and muzzel. I would bet that is whats happening to your dog.

The same thing happened with Piper. I was sure her beard was brown but it turned out to be staining. I used Angel Eyes to deal with the stains around her eyes and to my surprise her beard cleared up within weeks and it's been perfectly white ever since.

I battle this with Tucker a lot, too. It's staining of some type for him. I hate it. I've got some whitening shampoo that helps, but I need to use it every day, and just don't get it done.

My GUESS is staining. It could be from the food or the water. It could also be from teething or allergies. Hard to tell. You might want to give Angel Eyes a try or wait and see if she grows out of it.
She is still as adorable as ever!

Vinny, Lulu, Gabby and Richie too!

Hard to say from the pictures, but my guess is staining. I would not recomend to use any kind ot antibiotic (like Angel eyes (who contain Tylan, or Tylan) but I would recomend you be be sure to keep the area dry.
The coloration comes from the area getting moised or wet, and with that comes bacterias and/or yeast.
One way is to very, regular, use a bit of potato starch to dry out the wet areas.
There is also "cosmetic" products (absolut forbidden for show) who will change the colours, if you have a problem with it...like Chris Stix, from CC http://www.chrissystems.com/chris_stix.htm MUCH better for the inviroment then to use antibiotics for colour change...

It is hard to tell from the pictures.

In my experience with Benji and Lizzie, they get more eye and muzzle staining if they drink the regular tap water. I use Brita water filter and the do much better with it.

I noticed that while I was feeding them chicken they had more tear staining and eye goop. When I stopped chicken, the eye discharge and the staining has gone back to their "normal" levels of pre-chicken feeding days.

Best, Poornima

Dizzie went through a faze of tear staining, and I took him to the vet to get it checked out, anyway everything was fine, and I used cornflour right in the corner of his eye to dry up the tears and collect the debris,it worked like a treat!!and now he is a little older it doesn't seem to happen, but I have the cornflour[cornstarch]on stand by!
