Daisy is in Heat!!

Hi Everyone,
Wouldn't you know it, Daisy went into her first heat before I could get her spayed. Had it on the list to do THIS WEEK, and she came into heat on Wednesday, while we were on vacation, no less. She was staying with our friends, thank goodness, and we came back a day early to tend to our sweetie.

So this is the question: How long does the "bleeding" part of the heat last? I have her in the diapers and she's doing fantastic. She is 9.5 lbs. and is just 8 months old. I thought I still had time!!!! YIKES!! So, the vet said that I have to wait approximately 5 weeks before I can get her spayed.

Let me hear your experiences!!! It's all new to me!! ~Pamela

The only experience I have with a dog in heat was about 35 years ago. My lab was in our backyard and a coyote jumped a 6 ft wall and raped her! I was so mad. (I think I saw a smile on her face) We had to have her spayed and aborted at the same time.
So..........I guess all I can say is.........be very careful! lol

Vinny, Lulu, Gabby and Richie too!

Be yourself, everyone else is taken.

It has been years for me, too! But, we used doggie britches on our poodle and I think the actual bleeding was maybe a week or two - long time ago! Yes, do watch her carefully!!

I'm sure the breeders on the list will be able to speak to this better, but I'll share my experience. Because my girl had urinary incontinence when she was young, my vet recommended waiting to spay her until after her first heat to allow her reproductive and urinary track to mature. So we had to go through this once about 8 months ago.

Here's a fairly clear article on the phases of dog estrus: http://www.vet.uga.edu/vpp/clerk/beimborn/index.php. The bloody part lasts for about 7-12 days and then the discharge becomes more clear/brown, lasting for another 7-12 days. It is this second phase where she will accept male dogs though I'm not sure if she can only get pregnant at the second stage or also the first. Honestly, to me the changes were not that clear cut so I was just really cautious throughout. So you will have to be vigilant with her for I'd say 3 weeks, just to error on the side of caution. We actually didn't let her go to the dog park for about a month because we really didn't want any puppies!

Also, our vet recommended waiting about 2-3 months after to get Felice spayed so that she was definitely in the anestrus phase and hormone levels were decreased. Daisy won't come into heat again in that time frame so you definitely could wait longer than 5 weeks.
