Newbie questions (added pictures)

We got Cody a week and a half ago. Everything is going great, he is just wonderful.....I am totally falling in love ;o) I do have a few questions though....maybe some background would help:

We got Cody from a woman that works with my husband, she had some unfortunate things happen in her life all at once and didn't feel like she could handle the dog at this time. Cody is 17 weeks old and has never been around kids, strangers or other dogs very much. The papers I have for him show that his parents are AKC registered and has champion bloodlines (starting with his father and going pretty far back on both mom and dads side.) It took him a few days to get to know us so he was mostly just sleepy and watchful. Now that he is feeling comfy he has been so much fun! He already knows "sit" and "lay down" and responds to "no" and his name (which we changed.) He follows me EVERYWHERE......even to the bathroom LOL!

First Question.....It appears that Cody is a chocolate but how do I know it isnt just bad pigmentation and is there any heath concerns that are different because he is (maybe) a chocolate? His nose is pink/brown his eyes are kind of hazel and his eye rims are a pinky/brown.

Second: He is pretty nervous around strangers...sometimes very scared and growly It doesn't seem very normal for this breed from what I am reading. I am taking him for nightly walks and asking every stranger we meet if they could please give him a treat. This helps and he eventually lets the stranger pet him but then high tails is as soon as he gets the "all clear." Is this just going to take time? Is there anything else I should be doing?

Third: potty training (suprise surprise ) He is doing AWESOME! The breeder and the lady who we got him from were using pee pee pads but that is an ick factor for me, I am more of a potty outside kind of mommy lol! He seems to understand that outside is the place he should be going and does wait 90% of the time for me to take him out. The trouble is that when he REALLY needs to go he has no problem going in the house. He never lets me know that he hass to go. He is only out of his crate when I can keep a close eye on him (which is most of the day) and I catch him 95% of the time, give him a stern "no" and put him outside. I guess because he is so smart with his tricks so far I have a high expectation? I know it will take time but I wondered if there was anything I am missing. Oh I go out with him to the potty and give him treats and/or lots of praise when he potties outside.

Thanks! I will try to post some pics in a min

His favorite place to sleep in my unfolded laundry! Fine with me because it gives me an excuse to no fold it!

You sound like you're doing all of the right things! Just keep getting him out there and socialize that boy as much as you can. He looks like a chocolate to me, and he's just adorable. He's lucky to be with a loving family now.
Welcome to the forum!

He's a beautiful chocolate and sounds like a normal Hav to me. It sound like potty training is right on schedule. Don't put huge expectations on him, it can take a few months to get the training reliable. Can he get outside on his own or does he need to tell you somehow? You could consider a doggy door or try and teach him to ring a bell to go outside. Keep it up with the stranger training. I have one who happily approaches everyone and one who is more cautious. Make sure the stranger knows to pet under the chin rather than coming in over the dogs head since that can be scary for a dog that is already nervous about people.

Keep up the good work and hav fun with him!

Cody's Mum,he sound like he is doing just fine! Some Havs are never that interested in other people they meet, which is actually quite handy. It is still early days yet and if you keep doing what you are doing I'm sure he will be fine.Again some Havs can be tricky to potty train,I think their bladders are small!!but as they grow they can hold it for longer.I must say our Dizzie took along time to 'ask' to go out,but we got there in the end.Puppy training classes are a very good way to socialize them.

He has to tell us because the only door out back is a sliding glass patio door.

Here are a few more pics I just took of him and Sadie (my golden) playing for the first time. So far this is the first time Saide has wanted anything to do with him, she has been very stand-offish with him. I was so excited.

"Come on Sadie, lets play!"

PLEASE!

Ahhhh....some lovin now ;o)

He is so cute. It is early days. Hope fully he will take some cues from your other dog. My dog Yogi only had one accident in the house and my Shih Tzu was outraged and started herding him out the door (I have a dog door but still go out with them three times a day) so he started going out with Poohkey everytime he'd hear the dog door. Boy was that easy!!!!!

Robbie, Boo Boo, Yogi, and Misty's human.
Poohkey miss you, monkey.

I'm so glad Sadie is warming up to him - it just takes time! What a cute shot of the kiss!
