Vaccine Side Effects

Tux had his 1 year Rabies shot 3 weeks ago. Yesterday he had his Distemper vaccine. With both vaccines this time he got very lethargic. The morning after the Distemper shot he threw up, and then had a very soft stool. He has refused to eat his normal food all day today. The vet office told me to bring him in if there was more of the same. So far today he is just lethargic, weak, and has no appetite. I am calling the vet tomorrow if this keeps up. I am concerned that a vaccine can have this strong an effect. Has anyone had the same problems and did it get worse with each progressive series of annual shots? He didn't seem to be affected when he was a puppy.

Gosh I hope Tux feels better tomorrow. I am nervous now as I just had Hershey in today for his 1 year rabies and distemper shots. Here they give them on the same day. He seems to be fine right now, but I am keeping an eye on him.

Well, I don't do "annual" shots, and haven't for a number of years. I do titers instead for parvo and distemper. Where I live, Rabies is a 3 year vaccine, so I do that as required by law. So I am pretty conservative when it comes to vaccinations and I STILL ended up with a dog who had a severe vaccine reaction. Kodi had a severe enough reaction to his last Rabies vaccine (4 years ago now, he ended up in the ER with a high fever following his3 year Rabies booster) that he qualifies for a Rabies vaccine waiver for life in our state. Because of that vaccine problem, my vet has said he should not receive any further vaccines of any kind. Another Rabies vaccine could kill him.

Fortunately, his titers are all still strong, so I feel very confident that he is protected, even without further vaccination.

For future reference, even if the vet doesn't offer it, I would NEVER allow more than a single vaccine on thesame day. Even if it means a second visit, I would separate all shots by at least 3 weeks. And I don't do a 1 year booster for distemper or parvo. I titer instead. Both Pixel and Panda only had two distemper and parvo shots, and both had good titers at a year.

Yes, Tucker has permanent problems from vaccines he received as a young dog. Too many, too close together. He had bad reactions that I feel sure accounts for his faulty immune system, IBD, and food intolerances/allergies. He hasn't had any more vaccines in several years. No more for him, either.

Yup. Sheri and I have talked about this before. When Kodi and Tucker were puppies, we didn't know what we do today.

I had asked the vet if Tux could get titered rather than have the vaccine. Her response was we could do it from now on, but this first one at one year of age was necessary. She is conservative so I respected her advice, but now I'm second guessing. The Rabies is not annual. I misspoke. It is given at one year of age and then every 3 years after. I am terrified of these vaccines. Now that there is social media, you can discover there are more problems than previously known.

Kosmo was extremely sick after Parvo. He stumbled and fell going down stairs. Squeeled when I picked him up. No negative reaction to rabies. I don't know yet what the permanent effects in him are. Please, new puppy owners, space these required shots!

And that is one important reason to separate them... even if it weren't such a huge jolt to the immune system to give more than one at a time. If you give multiples at once, you have no idea which one caused the reaction. I even space out heart worm and flea/tick protection for this reason. I want to know WHICH substance is at fault if there is a negative reaction.

We spaced all vaccines out, and yet Tux is still suffering lethargy. They say there are several "common" side effects, but I question if "side effects" are not as benign as the label suggests. On the other hand, when I read the devastating symptoms and slow painful death that are caused by Distemper, it seems like vaccines are the lesser of the two risks. I know that we will titer from now on and avoid what vaccines we can safely omit.
