Help Ticks!

A few weeks ago we found a tick on our 10mo old Daisy. We had our yard sprayed, check our other Hav, Pixie and golden retreiver , Katie. They were fine. They are in our house 90 % of the time. When they are out on the front lawn they are on a leash and on grass only. I have a small 30ft x 30ft. garden which is fenced in. That is the only place in the back they go. I don't take them to parks or are they around other dogs. Yesterday I was grooming them and applied this months flea tick mosquito drops (Banfield's own). That evening my husband found a two ticks on Daisy. One big and the other small. It was late and I did a real quick check on the others. Well today I took a good look and found about 5 on Pixie and 4 on Daisy. Help! I threw away their doggy beds(which I found a couple ticks in the folds) day cushions down stairs, sprayed my bedroom floor, have checked all corners and walls where the ceiling meets and vacuumed upstairs and down. I thru away the vacuum bags. I called Banfield pet and they said I can't wash the girls till after tomorrow. Daisy has long cottony hair and has never been cut. I am thinking of having her taken down till this tick thing is gone. Pixie has 2 inch curly hair and a shaved tummy. ANY other suggestions?

Wow Susan,
that's a whole lot of ticks! I'm really sorry you are having such bad tick luck. I personally use frontline plus, a couple of vets I trust told me that it's scientifically head and shoulders above any other product. previously I was using advantix. I'm sure there are lots of great products to ward off fleas and ticks.

are you going to exact the ticks? or will the medicine just kill them in 24 hours?

My husband and I slowly rock them off with tweezers. That was before I saw the cotton ball and soap idea. I just got done doing a little brushing and so far I haven't found anymore. Daisy's hair is so long it's hard to look. Luckly she has been a good "patient".

We use Frontline (I am thinking Plus, I know it is something extra on the box) for ticks/fleas. When I first started using it, I found a few ticks...until the medication really got into their system. Both of my boys are on Frontline. You almost have to start a month before the hot weather gets here. Make sure the medicine is put directly on the skin right behind the head/neck area (so they cannot lick it off). NC is really bad for ticks!

We had tons of ticks last year, but none this year. I don't know why that is. Actually, it was my husband who got bit by a tick this year and got Lyme.

I got two ticks off of me this past weekend. I was weeding around thick bushes in my front yard that were under my neighbors pine tree. One was a large one and the other the tiny seed tick that I couldn't see and husband had to pull off. Rosie is not allowed in the front yard where the bushes are. Knock on wood but so far no ticks or fleas. (I know I just jinxed myself). I haven't used anything on her yet.

We live right next to Old Lyme, CT - thus the name Lyme disease. We use Frontline, plus give Milo and Brook the Lyme disease vaccination.

Frontline plus...my vet, whom I also worked with for 10 years, uses it on his dog.

We had no luck with Frontline Plus around here. Last summer when Kodi came home from a walk with 10 ticks on him, I went back to the vet and said we needed to try something else. He switched him to Advantix, which he said was working better on ticks in our area. Even with the Advantix, he got a few, but WAY less. I think it depends what area of the country you're in, and whether the fleas and ticks there have become resistant to a certain treatment.

This year the ticks are just not nearly as bad around here. I've only seen two all season. One on Kodi and one on me. In both cases it was early in the spring.

Interesting. We're in the North East too... Mass. We've had the same experience. Last year was a horrid tick year, and this year almost none.
