Could Holly be too small to go into heat?

I know that she can go into heat at any time, but somewhere in my brain, I seem to remember reading that a dog on the small side of their breed may not always go into heat.

Holly is 8 months old and weighs just under 5 pounds. Her parents were small, too, but around 8 and 9 pounds. Her brothers are all larger than she is, the smallest is now about 8 pounds. I thought she would be bigger by now and perhaps she will grow some more. Vet isn't concerned (dealing with a very small town vet, btw) and I don't know if I should be??

Any thoughts?

I am not sure about going into heat. My guys were all fixed at 6 months. I stay away from the smaller havanese because my Bella, now 7 lbs, had a liver shunt. There are many small havanese that are healthy, but you might want to get a bile acid test just to rule out a liver problem.

Believe me most any female dog can go into heat. I would get her spayed and have them health check her also. I have seen little Yorkies not more than 4 pounds bred. I wouldn't take a chance on the heat.

Size has nothing to do with going into heat, age does and Holly is old enough.

Jammies is small also. I think she came into heat the first time at almost a year old. About 6 months later, she did again. Unfortunately, with her heart, she can't be spayed. She is cute with her diaper and onesie on though...LOL

Agreed! They have a significantly higher chance of ovarian cancer after their first heat!

My female was slow maturing but isn't particularly small, Her first heat was at 13 months.

Thanks everybody! I didn't realize the risk of ovarian cancer. I am calling the vet on Monday!

Not to mention the increased odds of developing mammary cancer...
