I think it is very different depending on the city and the state. In California, we have a few dog-friendly cities, but it is generally frowned upon to bring your dog into any restaurants (health codes). However, many outdoor cafes or places with outdoor seating will still allow it. A lot of stores have restricted dogs from entering (even Home Depot) because of owners not watching and allowing their dogs to mark merchandise or aisles.
I took Piaget into a large department store with me when I was up in Oregon last week, but I put him in a small dog crate and set it in the shopping cart without saying anything to anyone. I didn't want to risk carrying him in my arms and getting asked to leave, but I needed to get something and will never leave my dogs in a car. A few people saw him there, including a child who pointed him out to her mother, but the mother didn't believe the child. LOL! When I got to the register, two clerks noticed and oogled over him, but said they wouldn't tell. (I got the impression that he probably wouldn't have been allowed if noticed upon entry.)
All that to say, it probably will depend on the employees & management of the particular businesses you will visit there.
