Can I bring my Hav to a restaurant/store in the States?

I live in Europe and bring our Hav almost everywhere: many stores, restaurants etc and he's really well behaved. When I move back next year, can I still bring him to restaurants or some stores? I think I read where someone took their dog to Nordstroms. We live in the DC area (in Maryland actually).

Thanks in advance!

wow, a grocery store is the really ONE place they don't allow dogs here in Germany. Beamer is cute, so I can see why they awwwed at him! Did you have him on a leash or in a bag or carrier?

I think it is very different depending on the city and the state. In California, we have a few dog-friendly cities, but it is generally frowned upon to bring your dog into any restaurants (health codes). However, many outdoor cafes or places with outdoor seating will still allow it. A lot of stores have restricted dogs from entering (even Home Depot) because of owners not watching and allowing their dogs to mark merchandise or aisles.

I took Piaget into a large department store with me when I was up in Oregon last week, but I put him in a small dog crate and set it in the shopping cart without saying anything to anyone. I didn't want to risk carrying him in my arms and getting asked to leave, but I needed to get something and will never leave my dogs in a car. A few people saw him there, including a child who pointed him out to her mother, but the mother didn't believe the child. LOL! When I got to the register, two clerks noticed and oogled over him, but said they wouldn't tell. (I got the impression that he probably wouldn't have been allowed if noticed upon entry.)

All that to say, it probably will depend on the employees & management of the particular businesses you will visit there.

Here's what I don't understand... Havanese are almost "hypo allergenic" so even if someone is allergic to dogs, they won't be to our Havs. Then if you have the dog in a carrier, really what is the harm in having a dog in a department store?

Not sure but I do not believe you can take any animals into areas that serve food in the US, at least not in Georgia. I've taken mine to shopping centers and stores.

I think Long Island is the most dog UNfriendly place to live. Sometimes you can eat with them if there is outside dining, but it is a big to take them into stores. Forget about beaches, and you can't even walk them on the boardwalk. You can bring them to a few parks here, but they have to be leashed and only stay in certain areas. We have several dog parks here.

My granddaughter and I took Allison to the local Mall in her stroller. We were having a great time until a "security guard" came up to us and rudely told us we have to leave the mall sine our dog might bite someone !! My granddaughter was in tears when we left. Connecticut is not dog friendly !!

I wouldn't even think about taking my dog to a restaurant. The only store I take my Hav to is Petsmart and I don't recall having seen dogs in other stores I frequent. Dogs are not permitted in the office building in which I work. They're not permitted on the fields where my kids play soccer, nor at other fields where they play field hockey. They're not permitted at my town's public beach. They're not permitted at some of the campgrounds we go to. Bottom line - I wouldn't assume you'll be able to take your dog places here like you can in Europe. There are dog parks and some beaches where they're welcome, but there are an awful lot of public places where they're not.

Eurohav, as someone with allergies I can see how they couldn't make an exception for one breed of dog. And that being said- I do know somepeople who are allergic to our wonderful Hav's. But I think it also has to do with liability and safety.

Do your Hav's ears stand up? Please post more pictures he/she looks like a cutie.
