Cassie turns 2!!
Wow, as many have said, time goes by fast! Our sweet Cassie turned two today. She is such a good dog. For all those with new puppies and wonder if they have made a mistake, it does get better and better. By the time she turned one, it was getting easier and easier, and now we clearly have a lovely member of our family...the sweet little dog I hoped she would become.
My advice is the same as last year: invest the time in the first 8 or 9 months and that effort will pay off. Potty training was relatively smooth because we rigidly adhered to frequent trips out and constant supervison...gradually her access expanded to whole house, accident free. Potential separation anxiety was addressed from day one with short, then longer periods in lock-up (small gated bathroom equivalent of expen used by many) with no drama returns (i do greet her but calmly). She doesn't like to be left alone, but tolerates it. When she sees the leash come out which means she gets to go out with us, her tail goes up and wags back and forth. Before that moment, she looks worried about being left home but will voluntarily walk into lockup when asked. Grooming remains timeconsuming..despite puppy cut, she requires a comb thru virtually every day to avoid mats, but unlike previous dogs, no shedding around the house..just a soft undercoat that benefits from daily combing.
Human socialization has gone fantastically..she loves people, especially children. She even became a therapy dog for a neighbor undergoing cancer treatment..petting Cassie and getting all that love from her worked wonders for my neighbor. However, despite my best efforts, she lacks much interest in other dogs. We did puppy playtime and still do dog playdates, but she spents her time flirting with people, especially if children are present. Happy Birthday Cassie!
