Companion for my 18 month havanese

We are seriously considering a companion for Sadie but not another havanese. We are thinking of a standard or miniature poodle. Do any of you have this combination? The concern is temperament and we want a calmer poodle to offset Sadie's high energy level. Any comments?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Poodles were the ones with the high energy and Havanese were relatively chill?

^ Agreed.

I suggest another Havanese, but work with a breeder who will assess the pups in their litters and find you a laid back baby. All of mine are really laid back! Roscoe is the most chill, Maddie is super relaxed, although as a puppy she had a lot more energy, and Stella has bursts of energy but is overall very laid back.

I agree. Tucker's breeder ask us the energy level we were interested in and that best suited our life style. Tucker is laid back - he takes his time getting around to whatever he decides to do. That can be irritating when you want him to go potty quickly! On the other hand, he's playfully and energetic when it suits us.

I didn't have them at the same time but I had a poodle I just adored. He was a lover with a laid back sweet personality until he was out in the street and anyone passed by too close. Then all bets were off. My memories of my special little boy will always be with me. I think you should do fine with the combo, as long as you check with the breeder of your poodle to assess his/her temperament. Good luck with it.

I went for another Hav just to wear out Dexter! And.....so, we could see lots of RLH's.

Okay we are all biased. I agree, I have to vote for another Havanese. Izzy my older Hav is a lot laid back and Fergus is high energy and they balance very nicely. I think Natalie has the right ideal about letting the breeder help you pick a laid back pup. Once you have 2, a lot of the time they are entertaining themselves together

jenn, izzy,fergus and harry too!

Just to tell you what we noticed, Scooter's energy level declined when he turned 2. No more of the puppy craziness and he's much more mellow. He still has play time with RLH a few times a day and with him being a bit more calm I'm noticing that Murphy and Gracie are too.

I admit I'm biased when it comes to Havs but I've never had another breed so I can't offer any other opinion.

We've had poodles and a peke-a-poo but our Hav, Abby, is the most laid-back dog I've ever seen! She grabs a toy a few times a day and throws it around and has maybe one RLH and she hardly "ever" barks which is a real switch from my other small dogs. But, I agree with everyone - if you have your heart set on a poodle (I loved mine) then ask the breeder with help in determining their temperament. Good luck finding a playmate for Sadie!

Julia has 2 standards and a hav. She would be the one to tell you, but from what I remember they get along well and are a good combination.
