Pet Gate with Cat Door

hello! We are working on puppy proofing our home in preparation for our puppy's arrival in August. We expect to have our puppy limited for several months before letting him have some freedom in the rest of house. We have a very sweet and shy cat and I'm thinking that we would like to gate off the basement from the dog and make it the cat's escape area, with her food and litter box. I also read that dogs love to eat cat poop, so this will be for our dog's own good as well. I found a pet gate with a cat door opening, but I'm wondering if a full grown Havanese will still be able to fit through the opening? This is the gate, they have lots of models but the cat doors all seem to be 10 inches high x 7 inches wide.

Does anyone have this gate or similar?

Thanks!!!

Nice looking gate, but it would be useless to keep a Hav out, with the little door open. That is about the size of the opening of my doggy door, and Tucker is on the larger size for Havanese. (16 pounds.)

thanks Sheri! That's what I was afraid of!! I read some Amazon reviews where people described how they made the opening smaller, but I'm not sure I want to do that. My other idea is to get a regular gate (no small door) and put it toward the bottom of the basement stairs and my cat could just jump over it. But maybe the Hav could jump it too!

Some havs are quite accomplished climbers, but not so many are jumpers. I have a baby gate with squares of wire that my cat climbs/jumps and it works great--because Tucker is not a climber.

My kitty (who unfortunately had to be put to sleep at 17+ in June) was able to jump over the baby gates in our house until the week before she died. On the FLIP side, our smallest Havanese could WALK THROUGH the bars on our baby gates for the first couple of months! We had to attach plexiglas panels to all the gates to keep her in!

thanks for your reply, and I'm very sorry about your kitty, I know it hurts.

We loved her very much and I still see her around every corner. But she lived a good long life, and I'm glad we were able to make the end easy for her. She is now in our garden, between two 'Mouse Ears' Hostas. I thought she'd like that.

We used chicken wire on our baby gate the first couple of months! Loki figured out that he could get through it the first 5 minutes we home. They are such smart lil' things.

We have several of the baby gates with little doors so that the Havs, Leo and Rex, can go in rooms we prefer to keep the big dogs out.
