Confused!! Cocotini wouldn't play with Brandy

So I finally brought Cocotini over to my Mom's house to play with her 16 week old Havanese puppy-Brandy. Cocotini wouldn't have anything to do with her!! Not only did she basically ignore her, but when Brandy kept jumping on her to play, Cocotini (who has NEVER been aggressive) growled at her, growled louder, bared her teeth, then snapped at her!! I was horrified!!! Cocotini is always so laid back and playful-I thought she'd LOVE to play with Brandy.

On the other hand, my sister brought her 14 year old Coton de Tulear over and Cocotini wanted to play with her!! However she wanted nothing to do with Cocotini OR the puppy!!

So.... what do you all think could be the problem. I was planning on getting another pup in the Spring, but I'm now having second thoughts. Mindy and Cocotini get along so well together maybe I should just let things be.

HELP!!!!!!!

The only thing that comes to my mind is could they both be jealous of having a new competition around? I certainly would think this would wear off. Perhaps if you tried taking all three for a walk together they would begin to bond, or at least yours and your moms havs.

I think Cocotini was giving the puppy signals to back off.

Some dogs, like my 2, don't like puppies coming at them the way they do. They were very growly and "mean" to my neighbor's miniature schnauzer puppy when she came at them in a crazy, but playful way.
Now that the Schnauzer is over a year old, they are more receptive to her.
I think Cocotini's behavior to the puppy is pretty normal.

Perhaps as the puppy matures and calms down a bit they will play,
I bet Dave will chime in here...

Dexter still attempts to put Jack in his place. Lessssssssssssssssssssss growling for sure ....compared to the beginning of the relationship.

They do play back and forth. Dogs have to work out their place with each other.... Geezzzzzzz did I say that? Note to self.....Dogs have to work out their relationships with each other......

How old is Cocotini, is she used to being spoiled at your Mum's?maybe she just had a shock to find a new rival there,I wonder how she would be if Brandy came to visit you.

I think its normal for the "older" dog to put the younger puppy in their place. Daisy did this with Beau when we first added him to the family. Now Beau weighs 3 lbs more than Daisy. But she will STILL let him know she is the alpha dog though she's much smaller. She is the boss - but she will let Beau pester her and wrestle with her as long a it suits HER.

Neither Daisy nor Beau like a new puppy rushing up to them - especially if the new puppy is bigger than them LOL....

Young puppies just need to learn their place in "the pack". I bet Cocotini will be fine with Brandy as they become more accustom to each other... I'd just keep any eye on them so things don't get out of hand until the adapt to each other.

(I'm not a breeder or a trainer - just another owner who sees the same behaviors in my dogs.....)

Daisy Mae - born 4/05/08
Beau - born 4/25/09

thanks for the thoughts. I guess I was surprised because I have never had a problem before when introducing new dogs. I,too, wonder if it would be different if Brandy came over to our house instead of me taking Brandy over there. Cocotini rarely goes to my Mom's house (her dog that passed away this Spring really disliked other dogs), so actually Cocotini was running around checking things out on this visit. And Cocotini wanted to play with my sister's older dog-it was just the puppy she didn't want to play with. It just made me question whether to bring a puppy into our home as I was planning. I won't give up quite yet!!

Lynda, you're right- Brandy kept jumping on Cocotini (at the moment Cocotini is larger, but that won't be for long-Brandy is catching up fast.) At first Cocotini ignored her,but I guess she got irritated when Brandy didn't get the message. there is no question that Cocotini is the alpha girl at our house-she lets Mindy (who weighs TWICE as much as she does and is twice her age) know this ALL the time!!!
