Have Havs - Will Travel

I was reading about traveling with your havs on other threads and thought it might be nice to have a thread about how best to travel with our dogs.

When we just had one dog, we would bring Rico on the road with us for work. He loved hotel rooms, elevators, meeting new people, everything about it. I'm trying to get both of them comfortable enough in the van to be able to head cross country with them.

Should we keep them in their kennels while driving? Set up a closed in area that the two of them can move around in? Clip their harnesses to the seat belts? What are your experiences and tricks to keeping the dogs happy, comfy and safe on long trips?

We have Snoozer car seats for Roscoe and Stella! They love them because the can see out the window or curl up and take a nap

We also have the booster seats that are attached with seat belts that elevate them up so they can see out the window, they wear harnesses with a tether that keeps them in the seat but allows room to lay down. For shorter trips they have harnesses that attach to the seat belt. We used to put the dogs in crates in the bathtub of the motor home to prevent the crates from sliding around on the floor and hubby had installed a bar that we strapped them to in case of an accident. I am always nervous about animals not secured when travelling, so many stories of accidents where pets are not secured and fly out of the vehicle in a crash, roll overs especially that get injured or lost. I have a bit of paranoia about this.

I agree, Deb! My nightmare is dogs running loose after an accident.

I had a booster seat for Rico, but he kinda out grew it. So I moved to the larger wire kennel when traveling. But I would like to get them together somehow. Lucy likes to sit/lean on Rico when we're out driving. He's her protector! Maybe a large wire crate?

Also, never have the dogs in the front seat because even in a small crash if the airbags deploy they could possibly kill the dogs. At least that's what I was told.

Just a tip about the Snoozer car seats and others that have a carabiner with a locking mechanism to secure the dog's harness to.

DO NOT screw the locking mechanism on the carabiner shut. In an accident, the dogs may need to be released quickly by rescue workers - if the carabiner is locked (screwed shut), it may take precious time away from rescuing your babies!
