Havs @ the beach?

My boyfriend really wants to take Colby to the beach (Santa Cruz) this weekend with his family and their Lab. Is this a horrible idea? I'm really nervous about the water and sand! Colby isn't interested in the pool but I guess he went swimming with the Lab at a lake when being babysat...I'm not sure he knew what he was doing, he was just following the Lab into the water. Does anyone have experience with sand in fur? Is it a complete disaster to deal with?

Well, we just got back from Turks and Caicos and I can't wait to upload the pictures Gucci LOVED the beach, they like running in it, and playing in it, and YES, be sure to clean off all the sand (if there is an outdoor shower, or even a foot shower) you can wash off most of the sand and carry them indoors to dry off or else they WILL dump mounds of sand all. over. your. bed.

(ask me how I know ) I'm pretty certain she ran in the house, covered in sand and jumped on the bed to rub it OFF of herself and on to our bed. Her thinking behind this?

I love the beach and the havs love it too, They like all the cool new smells and running in the sand~~~~ and even the water, as long as she can chill with me and not have to swim. But to answer your question, YES..factor in time for a bath right afterwards or you will have a sand nightmare on your hands..

FYI---Dogs are not allowed at the Boardwalk Beach (if that is the one you are talking about???)
Animals needed to assist guests (such as guide dogs) are welcome at the Boardwalk. Other pets, however, are not allowed on the Boardwalk or at the Santa Cruz city main beach.
A “doggie” beach is available next to the Lighthouse on West Cliff Drive (hours are restricted) and there are several boarding/kennel facilities within the Santa Cruz area.
added from the Boardwalk website.....
Oliver and Comet often go to the beach but not in the Santa Cruz area

Sally,((Oliver)) Comet and Pennie too!

We've never tried it because I don't even like sand on myself! So, I'm no help!

Kara: what a great shot of you and Gucci! That's about as far into the water as I will go, too!!

From Gucci's face I would say she loves it as much as Cicero. He would run on a beach all day ~ but I do have to shower him off. It's really worth it to see them have so much fun!

Thanks, Kathie! That water was like bath water and so crystal clear, amazing how we've polluted what we have here after you see that~~

Dale, Gucci would love to play with Cicero, then, she loves to RLH in the sand.

The sand where we were was like sugar, it was SOOO fine.

Brooke, like Sally mentioned and I should probably add since I also live in a beach town, Check first with the beach/city your are going to, some have *rules* as to when you can bring dogs to the 'public' beaches. Here in Virginia Beach, you can only bring dogs between September til' May and they also put a parvo warning out, but I think that might be bogus to keep the dogs away from the tourists.

*some* beaches have rules as to what times they can be there, too...ie. 'after 5', etc.

Kara, I love that photo of you and Gucci girl in the water. I'm a little jealous. Looks like so much fun. If I close my eyes, I can almost smell the ocean.

BTW, are you still grooming her yourself?

Hi Brooke and Colby. We took Lola to Santa Cruz this summer. We actually stayed in Capitola and used New Brighton Beach which is dog friendly. She had a great time but did come home with fleas even though she was on a prevenitive treatment.
Have fun and be prepared for a bath.

and watch out for burrs in the grassy parts about the sand. ouchhhh.

Thanks Sheri and Geri yes, still grooming her myself, although, her coat seems to have lost some of its luster after spaying her, I can't get it back to pre-spay gorgeous-ness ....*sigh* don't tell her that though! lol
