NEW PET ABUSE LAW

Today there was a story about a pit bull that was stuffed into a plastic bin but found alive by two people who fed her and then took her to the vet. The dog had recently given birth (no sign of the puppies) and may have been burned. Good news is that the dog is doing well. This occured in Suffolk County on LI.

Some geography: Long Island is divided by two counties, Nassau and Suffolk. Within these counties are many towns and villages. I just heard a story on the news about a proposed Pet Abuse Law in Suffolk County. The law would be along the lines of the sex offender law. Anyone who has abused a pet would have to register with their town/village, etc in the hopes that this would be prevented in the future. Also, all pet stores and shelters would be notified so the offender couldn't get another pet.

I know it's not perfect, especially with buying puppies and dogs on the internet or from BYB/mills, but it's a step in the right direction. Now if they would outlaw selling dogs in pet stores, that would be a victory.

There should be a law making crimes against animals reported and databased like sex crimes, because most of the studies even say that criminals, murderers and the like most have histories of abuse towards animals and progress into bigger victims.

Seems like this problem has to be tackled on a state level since there isn't much federal interest in it, or so it seems..

its really sad what some people are capable of, how they can hurt animals, or other human beings without absolutely no remorse or regard.

oh Michele, what a horrible story. That poor baby. Where did you hear about it? I'm a pacifist at heart but when I hear stories like this I want the penalty to be an eye for an eye. The cruelty exhibited by some people is mind numbing.

Geri, it was on News 12 and also in Newsday. They did the story about the Pet Abuse Registry on the 11pm news last night.

Michele, do you by any chance have yesterday's newsday? I need it and forgot to buy it.

Do you mean Thursday's Newsday. Probably. I'll take a look and let you know. How soon do you need it? I'll be at work all day Saturday, but can get it to you Sunday.

There's no rush, but I really could use it if you have it. Sunday would be fine or even Monday. I don't want you to have to go out of your way. I can pick it up from you. I have an open house Sunday in S. Bellmore 1-3 but I'm free after that.

I have the paper, so anytime you want to get it, let me know. I'll be home Sunday afternoon if you want to come by.

How about if I call you from my open house to tell you what time I can leave. Thanks so much.
