Salt to induce vomiting

You probably all know this already, but we were kind of excited to find that it worked so well.

We had cause to use a 1/4 tsp of table salt yesterday to induce vomiting in Pepper. I just want to say that it worked perfectly! We placed the salt on the back of his tongue and a few minutes later he threw up bile, a little piece of bread, and a leg from his stuffed octopus. Aha! Goal achieved.

For those who don't keep hydrogen peroxide in the house, a little bit of table salt will do the trick if you need to induce vomiting.

Per our copy of the Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook, a 1/2 to 1 tsp of table salt on the back of the tongue should get you the desired result. We used a 1/4 tsp 'cause Pepper is small and, well, we were very nervous about trying this. Be aware that there are some things/reasons for which you do NOT induce vomiting so check before you induce.

I am SO glad it worked. We lost one dog to ingested fabric many years ago and it was awful. I never, ever want to go through that again.

YIKES!

I have never heard of this and I do hope I never have to do this, but it certainly is good knowledge to have.

I had never really thought about if you could use ipecac on a dog, I'd feel much safer with salt.

I'm sorry to hear you even had to go through it and how awful to lose a pet from eating fabric :hugs: That's heartbreaking

This should be a sticky thread. It's really important. I had no idea either.
