Red face EEWWW.... I never knew!

I was birthday shopping for Rose on the internet today at one of my favorite companies (Ryans Pet Supplies) and was brainstorming for things she would like. I've heard some great feedback on "pizzle sticks" and decided that Rose might like them. Upon looking at the photo of the sticks, I thought "Hmmm...that looks like a certain distinctive part on the male anatomy" and then it dawned on me why the sticks are called "pizzle" sticks

I did a quick Google search to confirm my thoughts, and found out to my horror that bully sticks are made out of the same part I can't believe that bully sticks are Rose's favorite chews... And the procedures to making the treats are repulsive *insert sick face*

You can guess what she's NOT getting for her birthday!

Am I the only "innocent" person on this forum? Did you know what bully sticks are made from?

Yup, I knew. That's why we've never had them here. They'd never be allowed to kiss me again.

I was pretty grossed out when I found out too. Mine don't get them anymore because they give them horrendous runny poo. Flossies are much easier on their systems, and don't have that nauseating smell (not as bad anyway).
Happy birthday Rose!

I suspect that the origin of the bully stick is a big topic of conversation with every breed group As gross as they are, I do give them to my guys as a big treat! Very rarely but every so often. They LOVE them. I try to give them to them when they are outside, so the smell does not bother me

Yes, I knew, too!! Pretty gross! I used to give mine bully sticks which they love, but after Mindy chewed off a large piece which almost totally obstructed her intestine-NO MORE!!!!

If I decide to give them anything similar it will only be flossies, and only for a special occasion as they are somewhat pricey and they chew them up in about 15 minutes!

Yes, I knew and was shocked when I found out. My girls love the Merrick Flossies and I never checked the body part they come from because I don't really want to know they are the same thing prettied up.

Ewww. No more bully sticks for Lilly. It's so hard to find something long lasting for her to chew on other than the coffee table leg.

Aside from the fact of where they (bully sticks) come from, they kind of scare me as I have a paranoia about choking. And then I had read about obstructions or near obstructions and I just have never bought them for Augie. I used to give a flossie occasionally when I brushed/combed him to keep him occupied when he was younger, but haven't done that in ages either. He would devour it so quickly, I was afraid he would end up choking on the big end piece.

Does anyone use the Nylabone Edibles? SW is wanting something to chew on, it seems.
