Introducing Wiley Boy
Hi everyone, I'd like to introduce you to Wiley Boy, Wiley for short.
He is our first dog. We have always been cat owners. So this is a big change for my husband and I. Wiley has been with us now for nearly two weeks and this is the first chance I've had to sit and focus on writing to you all.
Wiley just turned five months on the 29th of August. He is a handsome and very big boy. He weighed nearly 12lbs. at his well puppy vet visit a week and a half ago. I think the pictures show that he is a chocolate parti. He has become very attached to me, I was the one who picked him up from the breeder. We had quite the adventure together getting back home.
First the travel bag I brought was too small for him to fit in comfortably. So I had to rush out to find another one in a town I was totally unfamiliar with, not knowing if I would be able to find a larger bag. My flight was in four hours so there was a real sense of urgency. Then there was the question of whether a larger bag would meet the airline's standard and fit under the seat on the Southwest flight. I didn't actually know until I took my seat and carefully tucked him under there, phew.
To top it off the flight was delayed two hours and we had already been at the airport for two and a half! This poor little guy, plucked from his cozy home, taken from his litter mates, being schlepped in a bag across who knows where, by who knows who and I had made the mistake of putting his food in the bag that was checked ahead of time. Bad Mom.
But Wiley is a real trooper, he was quiet and sweet and very interested in all that was going on. He must have looked so cute in his travel bag with just his head sticking out of the top, watching every person who walked by. We made due with a tough situation and got home in one piece.
So that was a real bonding experience and he has become VERY attached to me. He is starting to be more affectionate with my husband, but is still happiest and most agreeable when I'm around.
His training is going well. He is walking on his leash, still not in a straight line and will randomly shoot off like a rocket, but he is getting better. We have been having some potty issues, he has pee'd a number of times on the carpet and hallway (tiled) but with the help of the forum and related links we've come to understand better what we are doing wrong. We gave him too much freedom too soon. Also we have started using treats for potty runs. It seems to be working. No mistakes yesterday or today.
Also, I have to publicly thank my husband for his commitment to developing the most balanced dog we can, I don't know if I could do it by myself. I am surprised by my lack of awareness and intuitiveness in puppy rearing. I did a great job with my son, and really felt I understood what a dog was about, but I find myself humbled by this little guy.
Apparently he is still teething too, we have found three teeth laying on the floor in the past couple days.
Well, I could go on and on, but Wiley is calling. Thanks everyone for being out there, I feel like I've joined a kind of family. I can feel how much you all care about these dogs, and now I really understand why. I'm in love again.
I am taking the attitude that we are all learning together and that we will one day find ourselves not even thinking twice about our routines and behaviors, and just enjoy life together.
P.S. I have added a small photo album, I hope it shows up, I'm not used to this site yet.
