Is he/she left or right handed?

With humans, about 90% are right handed, and 10% are left handed. With dogs, the percentages seem to be about 80%

right pawed, about 20% left pawed, according to this Animal Instincts website .
As a matter of fact, left-pawed dogs are much favored when it comes to training police and guide dogs—according

the faculty of Veterinary Science at University of Sydney.
Based on the theories and studies above, clearly a left pawer is a winner to have not just in working dog

industries but will also benefit owners who want their dogs excel in agility, flyball, obedience, or even in canine

freestyle (a.k.a. dancing with dogs) activities. However, on the less cheery side to this study, left pawers are at

a greater risk to some diseases. To determine whether your dog is right handed or left handed, watch to see which

one he/she uses to paw at things.

Here is another thing I am curious about. Does the side their tail falls on have any significance - in say a right or left-handed dog. Augie's always falls to the right side of his body. Is this just random from dog to dog? Do they usually fall to one side, mostly to the right? mostly to the left? When you brought up the subject of right and left-handedness, it made me wonder if there was any correlation with the way the tails fall to whether they are right or left handed. I certainly cannot tell that Augie favors one paw over the other, but am going to be watching more closely now.

Interesting thought on the tail, Gucci's falls to the left side of her body...you know they say we humans have one side of our body bigger than the other, one hand bigger, etc...I wonder if dogs have the same thing???

I asked Gucci to high 5 me today, twice so far...she did one time with her right and the next time with her left, so I am still not sure....lol, It's be interesting to know.

Hey Kara , didn't we have a thread on tail direction before. ? Can't remember ,but Molly's falls to the left. Oh yeah ,some dogs are considered ambidextrous if their percentages are withing the 60/40 range.

I do remember that thread, but we never established if it had anything to do with paw usage or if one side of their bodies is bigger than the other, like humans...

I wonder if anyone has ever googled such a question?? lol

Funny but I'd never noticed it but now that I'm looking I have noticed she doesn't really paw at things - she goes at them with her mouth!!! Wonder what that means.......lol She did "high five" me twice this morning, though, and it was with her left paw. I'm left-handed so maybe she takes after her mom? BTW, her tail hangs to the left, too!
