ROSIE Wont GO POTTY OUTSIDE

This may be the same as littlebuddy's post. And I answered his with his dog is just mad at him for leaving him. Well, we didn't leave Rosie, we took her to Nashville this past weekend. She and the 6 year old have really bonded and they played chase and she was fooling with Rosie all the time. She would take her out to go potty and Rosie never failed to go. She only went on the pee pad once in three days.

Well we get back home late Sunday and I immediately take her out back and she refused to get off of the sidewalk into the grass and kept going to the back door. I finally gave in and let her back in the house, where she promptly peed on the pee pad. Today is Wednesday and so far, she has not gone outside once. I go out with her and everything but she runs back to the door. This morning she barely made it to the pee pad and did both. Maybe she is mad with me because I didn't bring Natalie home with us. You think?
They are all coming in this weekend and will be staying with me. If she goes for Natalie and not me, I really have a problem.

If you want her to go potty outside, then everytime she goes back to the door direct her back to the yard. Block her with your body everytime she tries to go back up. Put her in the yard and say potty, repeat, repeat, repeat. You are doing what she wants instead of her doing what you want. Praise her like crazy when she goes in the yard and in no time at all, this will be the normal routine.

Maybe she is mad with me because I didn't bring Natalie home with us. You think?

This is human logic, not dog logic.

Peace, Love & Havanese

Is it raining outside? Grass wet? Gucci will sometimes try to do this if she doesn't want to get wet, but if I go walk around the grass, she'll often come follow me and then she can't resist the scents and ends up going.

If you pick the pad up would she go on the floor? I don't want to suggest that unless it would make her more apt to go outside if the pad wasn't where it is supposed to be.

They just get stubborn ideas from time to time, be consistent on this one, I agree with Paige, the praising will work..

It was probably more fun for her to go out with your granddaughter! That said, sometimes Abby just won't go out in the grass and keeps heading back to the door and I have to just stand there telling her a little sternly "out in the grass!" and eventually she gives up and goes out and potties!

Of course, Rosie will probably have a relapse after another weekend with the granddaughter......lol

It has nothing to do with her being mad at you. They don't hold grudges. They may lose trust, but they never hold grudges. She had some sort of bad experience in the grass. Did you go out in the grass with her or did you stay on the sidewalk? Any anxiety in you will only make it worse. Try to get her to play a game in the grass and don't even worry about her going potty to start with. Once she feels comfortable in the grass again, she will be fine.

Misty hates wet feet. We thought at first it was grass and she does hate wet grass. She does not like the back yard at night and that is because when we first got her there was a Copperhead laying in the water. So I figure I will spend the next 3 to six months watching her for clues and someday she will be ok with the wet grass. She does use the dog door for runing out to chase squirrels. Here is a picture of her on the top of the stairs looking at me. We spend a good 20 mins several times a day like this when it's rained.

Oh, she looks so cute! I don't blame her - I don't like to get my feet wet, either!

Rosie ran through the wet grass at Nashville. But Last night we sat outside for over two hours. Rosie and Josie played and ran the chickens. they were all over the back yard. I watched Rosie carefully. Finally as I was beginning to give up, she peed. We made a big deal of it and gave her rib eye steak for the treat. So, this morning she went and again this afternoon. Course, I would too for ribeye. I would love to take up the pee pads or at least just have one; but rainy days the pee pads are wonderful. And of course if we ever travel much with her, she can use them. Maybe we are over whatever was the matter.

As to dogs not getting mad--well mad is probably not the correct word. When I was in grammer school, we were taught that animals had no feeling, they just went on instinct. Obviously the writers of the text books at that time didn't have animals. I know that they are jealous, and that they can be "peeved at their owners at times". I really think that Rosie missed the granddaughter. I hope that it doesn't work out like the cockateal that I once had. I left it with my neice while we traveled. When I went to get him, he would not look at me. No matter how hard I tried, he would turn his back. So, the niece has the bird. He is nearly 20 years old and still won't look at me. Course Rosie has no option. she stays with me.

ohh dogs have feelings alright! lol I know when Gucci is mad at me she avoids eye contact and 'huffs' at me, like a human sigh/huff..it is the funniest thing to me.

Of course, she is love with me again 2 seconds after I pissed her off, usually for not caving into to some ludicrous demand for chocolate chip cookies (or the like)...we work past it......

Misty is just precious!! It is pretty common for havs not to like the rain and wet grass, I don't like it either but some days, that's the only way I get her out in it.

Lucille, like you...I love that I have her pad trained. That comes in SOO handy at the airport when we have layovers and I can take her in the huge handicap bathroom and let her go on the pad, we don't have to go outside and deal with going through security again. I even had her go once in the tiny airplane bathroom....don't ask me for details on how I navigate that, lets just say it took some extreme acrobatic skills to give her all the room for her to do her business....

the things we do for these pups, lol...I tell ya.......

Lucile, I am glad to hear things are returning to normal. My Shih Tzu did not like the rain when I first moved here (he was very prissy), he did over come it. So my hope is Misty will overcome this. She has only had two accidents in the house, that is hugh since she came from a more kennel type environment, more dogs, lots of puppies and always something going on, Spending lots of time in the puppy rooms etc. She has settled in nicely. My Tsu and my Lhasa still is, were trained to pee on demand. In CA this was important. here in NC as long as they go out I don't care.
