First Walk

Well Radar had his first walk in the world today after his final shots. My Wife Dovanna took him for a walk with the collar. He didn't do all that well on the way to my parents place but he did pretty good on the way back. Radar was pulling all the way over there and he was stopping alot to rest. On the way back he would walk with My Wife at her side and the lead was pretty loose for him so I was rather impressed when I found out how he did.

Way to go Radar......

Awesome! That can sure be a struggle! My friend has a new Cairn Terror <BG> puppy and she is having a very hard time with this! Her other dog has obedience titles. It isn't that Roxie pulls but as soon as she feels the leash is on she stops and lays down all flat. They have dragged her, grabbed treats, lets just say she is stubborn as can be! I thought they were kind of crazy and I asked them if I could try... lets just she doesn't care if you have her favorite toy in the world, as soon as she feels that leash on she throws all her little weight down. She isn't that young either- 6 months and they are having this battle!

So lets just say good job Radar!!!

Yay Radar!!

We had to start with VERY short walks, like a few houses down the street and back and work up to longer distances. She seems to really like it now, so much so...that she practically tries to run and drag me along! SOOOO it is still a work in progress, it kinda looks like *I* am getting walked by the dog!

Tripp always wanted to 'walk' me too. Then we started training classes & she taught me how to walk him & it made a world of difference. Now we all like to go for walks & before he was all over the place so i avoided walking him. Dreamer, as usual, always walked perfectly-right next to me.

I'm looking forward to that! We start Puppy Preschool next week, and I'd like to keep going with training classes. I've heard so much praise for the trainer we are seeing I will ask her about this. Its almost comical in a sense...I'm sure my neighbors have laughed at this little bitty dog dragging me down the street!

I do have a question about walks. Since i am getting a puppy soon, i know you cant walk the pup until it has all of its shots. Does that mean you cant walk it anywhere, even if its on your own property? We live on many acres & are always walking with the dogs. Sorry if its a dumb question.

My vet told me that it was okay to do short walks around my house, if I felt confident that my neighbors took care of their dogs (which I do, except for Cujo down the street) but NOT to take her to parks, the beach, etc.

I was fortunate enough to not really encounter any dogs when she was younger on our walks...but they were very short and more to just get her used to the harness.

I would ask your vet, they know more about what is "going around" your area. Like my vet said parvo was a big problem at the beach and rabies on the other side of town...he actually had a chart of where rabies was found in our area.

Hmmm...

We have wild animals too, but probably not as many as you do. Mostly rabbits, squirrels and a Fox that likes to hang out by my house at night

What about just morning walks on your property? You have to really watch what they are sniffing at....they gravitate right towards the rabbit droppings ugh.

Fortunately, since hubby put up the chicken wire, we haven't had as much rabbit poo...but then the rabbits chewed a hole in the chicken wire! ugh. Which reminds me, I should get off the computer and go fix it! lazy me!

Rabbit droppings? They think its caviar for dogs!!! Why is it that they wont eat their own poop(thank goodness!) but dont mind rolling/licking someone elses??

Actually when we go for our walks with the leash, they know its not time for sniffing. I try to keep a good pace going. I wish i could walk them in the mornings buts its still dark & we have no lights anywhere.
