Males & potty pads

Is a male lifting its leg to pee an issue with using potty pads? Just wondering how well pads work when the dog doesn't squat to go!

Mine have never lifted their legs to go, they’ve always been fully house trained before leg lifting ever crossed their minds. If they get neutered before they start lifting their leg they likely will never start.

Thanks! That's good to hear. Just curious--how old were your dogs before neutering? I've read the longer you leave it the better for their bone growth...

Well my first was neutered at 6 months which was kind of the standard age 20 years ago, then I got one who was a young neuter at 10 weeks (his co-breeder was a vet), supposedly they were studying early neuter and bone density back then (14 years ago). My new pup won’t be neutered until he is at least a year old, probably 18 months.

Are you planning on using pee pads into adulthood? There are indoor potty systems like piddle place that come with a "backsplash" type device to help with leg lifters.

Mine only lifts his leg to mark (only outside never in the house). He squats if he really has to pee. He has never missed the pee pad which he only uses in an emergency.

My boy doesn't ever mark inside the house... he learned that VERY early. He does use an indoor litter box at times, and whether there or outside, he doesn't lift his leg to pee. The two things are different, even though they both expel urine. A dog need to learn that marking is NOT and indoor activity.

I would like to use pads into adulthood as I live very high up in a high-rise apartment block and it can get wicked cold here in the winter!

I am all for indoor potties, but you might want to look into something a little more solid... at least a pad holder with a grate. Many Havanese are huge paper chewers. And chewed up USED potty pads are NOT something you want to come home to. Trust me on this! LOL!
