Traveling with Ache in December. Need suggestions !

We will be traveling to Puerto Rico in December and, of course, Ache and her BFF Wekee are coming with us. Wekee, our Chihuahua, has experience with airplanes and she is good with it but I am afraid because of Ache. What is worrying me is that Ache barks a lot at people (trying to get their attention) and also at new and scary experiences. Also, in December she will be 7-8 months and not fully housetrained. The trip to PR is 4 hours plus the waiting time... Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated !!

I am about to choose between these two carriers. What do you think ?
Petego- Jet Set Carrier

Sturdi Products Carrier

Thanks !

Stella flies with me quite a bit. Both carriers look good to me, the one I use has mesh sides so Stella can see out which seems to relieve some anxiety for her. I also love the shoulder strap because I can carry her and still have my hands free. The first couple of times I took her, I gave her a 1/4 of an Acepromazine 10mg. tablet. My vet prescribed it and it made her sleepy enough that she relaxed and did a great job flying and our travel time was 7 hours.

I took her food and water away from her about 10 PM the night before the trip and didn't feed or water her until we got to our destination. The first time, when she was 7 months old, I had enough time between flights to take her outside on her leash long enough to go potty but now that she's older, I don't need to do that anymore.

BTW, Stella is a barker too and always barks when people come to our house. I don't have any problems with her barking while traveling however.

When I traveled to bring a foster to his fur-ever home, I bought and used this:

Well, I got a more neutral color. The airline was very accommodating, putting the fold-up stroller piece is the closet up front. It sure saved this out-of-shape body of mine while getting through the airport. Plus it has a place for drinks, and pockets for things for little Havies.

Well, make sure they go potty at the airport before you go inside, if they are pad trained, carry a few pads in case they need to go and I would take Gucci into the big handicap bathroom stall and put the pad down for her, or the family bathroom..

Typically, last call is an hour or so before we leave and I limit the water through the trip.

I love the petego bags, I've never tried the other one, but they both look nice. I like shoulder bags with pockets to store stuff, and I normally use the stroller at the aiports and then put her in the bag right before we board, check the stroller at the gate and then grab it back on disembarking .

She might surprise you and be quiet and attentive with all of the people and smells, and maybe she'll follow the lead of her bff, that is bound to help having another dog there that is calm about it.

Gucci's fine, she just hates the loud noise at take off but other than that...

Oh,, or if someone near us bring fried chicken on board then that really drives me crazy because she drools and cries for it.... Other than that smooth flying!

Enjoy your trip!

Kara, I'm so happy to see you like your Petego . . .i just ordered this one:

And am considering ordering the Sport Trike featured in the video that this bag can attach to to turn it into a stroller. Is this stroller the one you're referring to in your above post? Wasn't sure if it collapses small enough to be gate checked? Thanks

I have always wondered about getting dogs through security. Do you carry them through and put the carrier through on the x-ray?

Exactly. You take the dog with you, pass through security and put the dog back in the carrier.

I had a Petote carrier for Max - think it was called the Kelly which had a large mesh frontage which I thought was perfect....however attempting to put the bag under the seat on an US Airways flight in Charlotte it wouldn't fit properly and they wouldn't let it stick out - needless to say they kicked us off the flight - it was awful...the person next to me on the plane said they didn't mind but the air stewardess was not an animal person and said it was my fault even though the bag's dimensions are within what the airline stated was acceptable.

Anyway I now have a Sherpa bag with mesh on three sides that he seems to find comfortable - I had looked at the petego one but thought it may have the same issues at the Petote one being unable to fit under the seat - now that other forum members have recommended I may try it as I like the idea that i can wear it as a backpack - would be much easier when going through the airport.

Max loves the airport - going through xray he gets all the oohs and aahs from the TSA people....when it is possible and we are between flights I get a smarte carte and he sits on the top part out of his bag and on his blanket so he is not cooped up all the time

:-)
