Am I seeing Havanese stages?

Bella is 3 years old. I've always enjoyed watching her and getting to know her personality--I guess that's a benefit of having an empty nest! Bella never had fear of noises, even the huge thunderstorms we get in Texas but these past few months, noises are catching her attention more. She seems to become afraid of strange noises--thunder, noisy cars, surround-sound on the TV, etc. She's barking at them and the bark sounds scared (does that make sense?).

I've begun to call her by my side when she barks and after she sits, I pick her up and show her out the window. That's helping.

She has also started to enjoy quiet and alone time, unlike before when she had to be with me 24/7.

Another observation is that she's become wary of strangers over the past 6 months.

There are certain changes showing in her and I wondered if it's part of a Havanese blue print. Are stages common knowledge with breeders, etc.

Interesting, what you're describing is more common with adolescence. But at three years seems probably more to do with individual stressors. Possibly some sort of loud noise triggered the response and she has generalized any loud noise to it. As far as the fear of strangers goes, keep in mind that socialization is always an ongoing thing. She has to continue to see and interact with people all the time. I'll be back with something on noise densensitizing shortly. Here's a great article by Patricia McConnell on sound/thunder problems http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/thu...a-in-dogs.html
