HYHYHT

HYHYHT? they might need it from all those scary goblins. Funny when I went outside to give out the treats last night. You could hear dogs barking everywhere inside the houses and outside. I swear every third house around here has a dog. I could hear six different dogs barking at one time. Poor duffs were scared , me thinks.

Thank you Dave - thanks to this forum the one thing we knew was so important was the whole issue of socializing - so we had a great puppy experience with three different sessions of puppy classes and we exposed him to a lot of people and dogs...he has always been on the more confident side but for anyone with new puppies take note - the socializing early really pays off later on.

Sylvia, did you do puppy classes before 16 weeks? Everything I read has me so worried about Sophie getting parvo or something before she's fully vaccinated. But I would love to put her in a puppy class.

the Beginner class we took started around 16 weeks - we had to bring vaccination records to class to ensure we and everyone else had been vaccinated. I'm looking at my info sheet now and it says 12 weeks or older - you may want to ask around on that. I felt the same way and was terrified before all the vaccinations were complete. One thing we were able to do is expose Kipling to safe situations - dogs we knew were vaccinated and fine, people, and environments that were safer...but even starting at 16 weeks and then being very diligent about the training worked well.

A note on that - we went as a family of four - DH, me and our two kids who were 8 and 10 at the time. This was really useful in that we all learned the do's and don'ts together. We all learned commands and used similar language with Kipling early. My DD...the youngest...is likely one of the best for reinforcement exercises. She works Kipling on sit/stay etc. really well. My DS is also very good about working him. So even now, he's still learning and listening better each day.

Our puppy trainers were very good about identifying fear in the dogs in our sessions. There was another adorable Hav in with us and he had fear showing up - so we all worked with him and we all learned a) that fear is something we should pay attention to, and b) that there are things to do to help with it. I take it seriously now.

Caution is ok - but fear can lead to problems later on.

I hope that helps

I would enroll asap. Newer guidelines have come out regarding this. AVSAB , American Veternary Society of Animal Behaviorists has these guidelines. The critical primary socialization period is soon ending. Here's the article. http://www.avsabonline.org/avsabonli...ialization.pdf Thanks for bringing this up. I think it deserves a reminder post of it's own. See my recent post "Puppy Classes / Socialization " Some classes have different requirements regarding vacs. Encourage them to read this article. This is very important information . For years we have been paranoid . It's time to recognize this narrow window of opportunity.
