Thank you for your food advice! (Some pics of my Shavanese too)

Thank you all so much for all the food and feeding advice. Our girl is little but feisty and picky. lol I worry when she doesn't eat because of hypoglycemia. Her German Shepherd 'sister' was easier to feed when she was young

She's cute as the dickens, but she is twisting you around her little paw. Unless she has something physically wrong with her, and the vet has specifically told you otherwise, she will NOT starve herself. And unless there is something wrong with her and she's not a normal, healthy Havanese puppy, she won't get hypoglycemia from missing a few meals either. If she got a tummy bug, the vey would tell you to fast her completely.

Offer her a good, balanced diet, 2-3 times per day. (as recommended by your breeder for her age... I don't remember how old she was. Mine all, on their own, dropped their lunch meal at around 16 weeks) Pick the food up after 10 minutes, WHETHER SHE HAS EATEN OR NOT. Then NO treats, NOTHING, until her next meal is due. Then do the same thing. She might skip 3 or 4 meals, but she WILL start eating.

Havanese are MASTERS at training their doting owners to think that they are "picky eaters. Believe me, that is NOT a road you want to go down. I started to fall for it with my first... until his breeder "trained" ME! With the two girls (the younger ones) I hardened my heart and didn't let them play this game with me. Their days of being picky were MUCH shorter, because it never "worked" for them.

@krandall WHAT??????? I was almost about to take her to the emergency vet after one day of a few missed meals. There I was googling hypoglycemia and all the bad things that can happen. hahaha It's the cute little, seemingly helpless factor they have going for themselves. I never thought my German Shepherd would starve herself and for her I did exactly what you suggested for 'picky girl' over here. But I don't think my Shepherd was ever this small. She is so stubborn. If you could have seen how pitiful she looked when turning her nose up at that food. She is so smart I should have known I was being duped. lol Thanks so much!!!

Ha! Dogs really aren't "stubborn" in the human sense, but they DO do what works. If it works to look pitiful and get you to offer her "better" goodies... she'll train you fast!

What a cutie! Willow was the same way with her kibble. She ate only enough to survive it seemed. I felt so sorry for her. It wasn't until I finally changed her food that she began to eat with enthusiasm and on a regular feeding schedule.

She does know how to train us though. There are certain times of the day where we must play a game that involves some form of treat. She lets us know when the time comes! I swear she wears a watch.
