Separation anxiety help/ day care

I would like advice on how to help my Teddy with his separation anxiety. I got him as a year old, he barks, whines, defecates when I leave him. ( I have been recording him on my laptop).

I have been working hard on desensitization sesssions, we were up to 40sec but regressed due to brand new job and move. We are doing the whole adaptil, thunder shirt, Kong treat, music stuff.

He has been in full time daycare since I've had him. I need help because $640 a month is honestly too much for me, and I havent been able to find anything more affordable. What should I do? Cut him off cold turkey with dog walker only ($300/ month) , and keep doing my current attempts of gradual improvement? I am even scared to go out anymore since I got Teddy. He is so lovely and the apple of my heart I would never give him up though!

I feel a "normal" dog would be ok with what i feel is the best I can do as a single working person- day care Tues/Thurs , dog walker mid morning MWF with me coming come during lunch. I got my new job because it's now regular 8hr day, flexible start time, I live literally 5 min from work.

Scared and frustrated Teddy mommy

Very sorry to hear this, flowie. We work long hours (gone from 6 AM to 4 PM or thereabouts) during the school year, and Shama has a dog walker come over from about 11 AM until noon. (She's a very sweet girl who writes us a note telling us if she got here a little late - we would never know . . .) The dog walker doesn't actually walk Shama. They just go out in the yard and play both in and out. My point is that if you can get Teddy used to staying home alone, you might not need the doggie day care. Since you have already done so much research and have been trying a lot of things, I would enlist the help of a professional at this point. Good luck! Please stay in touch . . .

Hi Flowie. I'm so sorry to hear this as well. I'm about to pick up a new puppy this Saturday and my biggest worry is managing the separation anxiety that from what I hear can be common with the breed. I'm going to follow the thread in hopes of reading people's suggestions. I work long hours and have budgeted two days of doggie daycare/week and a dog walker three days/week. My husband can also come home at lunch. I'm worried this will not be enough so I'm trying to learn all I can on how to prevent it and manage it. It sounds like you have been doing a great deal and agree with Shamamama about seeking a professional.

I agree that REAL separation anxiety, and that IS what this sounds like, is more than we (or anyone!) can help you with over the internet. It really sounds like you need close-to-home professional help. I would also talk to a veterinary behavior specialist, because often, it can be helpful to use meds in conjunction with training, to get a dog past the worst of this sort of problem.

I feel for both you and Teddy, and hope that you can come up with a workable solution!
