Eating

Radar has been tapering off his eating this week. I'm not sure if it's because of the Vet visit and the shots he got!!! Perhaps they made him not want to eat. My Wife told me that Radar has been having a major case of Depression/Separation anxiety when I leave for work in the day. He sat by the door the other day for a couple of hours at a time. He even slept there for a whie until I got home. My Wife said he looked at her every once in a while like he was saying "Where's my Daddy". I'm wondering when he'll begin wanting only two meals a day. The Vet said Radar would eventually stop eating his lunch. He barely eats his dinner until I get home and I make him a fresh batch of food and then he eats it all up. He was fine today. I think ot was just one of those things. When does a Hav begin to skip his lunch? I wasn't sure if it's around this time or later? I wonder if we reduce his lunch will he eat more of his dinner or perhaps the whole thing.

Any stories or Opinions.

Piaget is just getting into the weird eating schedule. He's weaned himself down to two meals a day already (14 weeks old). Earlier in the week, he refused any food for 48 hours. I feed all of my dogs individually and measure their food so I can tell how much everyone is eating and I was keeping a good eye on him when he refused three separate meals. Sure enough, that fourth meal came and he gobbled up every last kibble in it.

Have you read the chapter on eating in "The Havanese"? I love the way that was written. It eliminates any worries about these guys and their quirky eating habits.

Kimberly--how do you feed your dogs separately? No matter what I give Roxie, she will not eat eat without others (Brutus and I) around her. She thinks the food is better if Brutus is trying to eat it.

I'm thinking about starting Beamer on 2 meals a day. He never touches his breakfast.. mybe once a week or less he will eat it. Wondering if an early lunch and dinner meals would be better for him?

Derek, so much much is Radar not eating now? is he missing meals?

Cheryl, mine have all done that too, but I still separate them (wire crates are great for this) and then I take the food away after 20 minutes or so. In the beginning, everyone skipped their meals or ate skimpy. Now they know the food gets pulled away, so they all scarf it down.

You may want to check with your vet though. With Roxie's history, is still any concern if she skips meals for days on end?

Gucci has never really ate 3X a day, I put food out 3x a day for a long time, but realized that she wouldn't touch a thing til' around 10am. So recently, I just started her first feeding then (brunch ) And then again around 4:30-5.

Alot of dogfood still gets wasted, as..if she eats, its usually once a day and somedays, she won't eat anything (but her treats, and even then..I've had her turn down treats 1/3 of the time)

I'm hoping this is a teething phase, but if it keeps up...I guess I just have one of those "finicky" havs.

The one thing she ALWAYS eats is her bone (chicken jerky) that she now gets after grooming/brushing.

We stopped Havee's lunch at about 14 weeks. He's doing fine, gaining well and WAS anxcious to eat when it was meal time.

Now, however, he'll skip a meal every now and again and he doesn't get excited about eating like he used to!

If he doesn't eat, I don't treat him alot because I don't want him to think that all he's going to eat is treats! I'd rather he eats kibble than treats.

I figure if he's hungary, he'll eat. Maybe it's his way of slowing down.

Nico stopped eating his lunch about 3 days after we got him, and we got him at 9 weeks. He now eats 1/4 cup of kibble twice a day, plus half an egg yolk with breakfast. He doesn't eat every bit of it every day, and occasionally he'll wolf down his dinner so fast that we figure he's extra hungry and give him a little bit more. FWIW, he was 3 lbs. 7 oz. when we picked him up at 9 weeks, and he was 5 lbs. 4 oz. last weekend (at 13 weeks).

Yeah so I think it's gonna be an absent lunch for Radar from now on. I guess I'll just increase the amount of Breakfast and Dinner. I would like Radar to keep eating the same amount of food but just split into the two different times of day. I wonder if this might be the time to free feed him througout the day now since he is getting picky about the times he eats!!

I wonder....

From personal experience, she ate even LESS when I tried free feeding for a few weeks. She would just find other things to do, or sleep..lol...instead of eating. The set schedule works better, for us.

We do:

Brunch at 10ish
&
Linner at 4ish

Linner is a word I made up! (Sounds better than Lupper! lol) Sometimes, I even feed a big Linner to my human crew

But...every dog is different. I would try it for a few days and see how it goes! You never know unless you try.
