Grooming

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum. I have too little havys, Bailey is almost 2, and Enzo is 4 months old. I have a question for everyone. Bailey unfortunately had a puppy cut when he was around 6 months old, and ever since has been getting his coat cut (not as short) by a groomer. I want him to have a full coat, so i havent been getting it cut. How long does it take to grow out? Are there any tips anyone has for grooming? I am not going to make the same mistake again with my puppy, he is not getting a puppy cut. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks Everyone!

First, yay, I'm happy to see you here. Your dogs are soooo cute.

I have tried valiantly and sometimes in vain to keep mine in full coat. Milo and Bailey finally had to be shaved down after a losing battle with coat blowing. It took many months for their coats to grow back. I don't remember exactly how long but I think it was well over six months, could have been as much as nine or ten. Though I love the full coated look, there are distinct benefits to the puppy cut in my world. They stay so much cleaner and bring in far fewer sticks embedded in their hair.

Ruby, my little one had the same silky coat as Milo so I thought I'd get away with a not too terrible coat blowing phase but fate had it otherwise. I'm seriously contemplating cutting her down since I can't keep up with the matts, exacerbated by each of them pulling on the others hair and causing havoc.

First of all, WELCOME to the forum, Brooke, Bailey and Enzo!
I just have the one Hav, so I can't speak to the problems that wrestling and tussling with each other contribute to coat upkeep. However, Augie's hair has never been cut, with the exception of light trimming of some dry ends. And, definitely, coat type is going to be a major contributing factor to how easily they can be kept in full coat. Is Bailey your lighter Hav? Is his coat curly? I can't quite tell from your avatar. From what I have read on here, the curlier coats seem to be harder to keep in full coat, with more matting issues. Augie's coat is wavy and the more wavy areas definitely tend to mat worse. Keeping the coat clean, well conditioned and combed/brushed on a daily basis is key, in my experience.
I also think the shorter cuts are very cute on the Havs, you can see the shape of their little fannies - love the fannies!! But I have just not been able to bring myself to cut him down. If I had two to care for, that may be a different story.

Thanks so much for the advice! Bailey (the cream one) has a wavy-ish coat so he does matt often and i brush him everyday. I guess I will see how it goes and then if all else fails i will take him to the groomer (so much easier to handle). I hope my little Enzo has an easier coat to deal with! Right now i'm dealing with him losing his teeth

Brooke, how long do you have Bailey? He's absolutely gorgeous! Little Enzo is adorable too. I remember the bitey, mouthy stage. Not so much fun. I'd love to see more pictures. Let me know if you need any help uploading them.

We have had Bailey since April of 09, he'll be 2 in febuary. I tried to attach some photos of him below, hopefully it works. I had never had a havy before bailey, or even heard of them, but my fiance chose bailey while he was studying abroad in italy, and we couldnt be happier! We loved havys so much we had to get him a little brother. Now i can't get enough of them!

Hey there. YOu are just north of me. i am in Jensen Beach. I also have to Havbabies. Pixie is 2yrs. and has a curly coat. I don't let it get past 2 inches. She looks like a wooly bear and cute but it's to hard to keep her from matting, twigs or weed seeds from getting caught. I just had her groomed and it's almost an inch. I have them clip her arm pits and belly shorter. My youngest, Daisy is a year old. She has a silky coat which is easier to brush out daily. When she was 11 months old her coat was a beautiful 3 inches. Sadly we had a tick problem and I had to have her coat into a puppy cut. That was in August. Her hair is not almost an inch. I think I am going to keep her just a little longer. She loves to romp in our garden and it's easier to pull the mulch and debris from her coat.
