Teeth Cleaning

This Tuesday was Truffles turn to have her teeth cleaned. She's four years old and I thought it would be a good idea to have a it done. We took her to a dentist last week for a consultation. Her teeth looked good so we were expecting just a cleaning. We dropped her off and went to Sausalito for lunch and got a call. After x-rays a fracture and abscess was found on her lower front tooth. The last upper tooth had a abscess too. Both teeth had to be extracted and sutured. She had a little chip on an upper molar which the dentist smoothed out. She got a sealant applied. When we picked her up we met with the dentist to go over what was done and the x-rays. The biggest surprise was that dogs have 42 teeth and she was born with thirty-six! The ones she is missing are tiny teeth in the back. I've noticed when brushing she has spaces in the back, but just thought Scout had much larger teeth. When we took her outside she just stood there whimpering and wouldn't budge. I felt so bad because she whimpered in her carrier all the way home. She slept all night and was back to her crazy self the next morning. So glad Scout and Truffles had x-rays. Without them we never would have known there was a problem. So happy all that is behind us!

I've been debating a dental consult for my Jerry. This made my mind up to take him in.

So glad Truffles has come through okay. It's so hard when you take them somewhere for their own good but also know it's going to hurt them to get them better.

Henry had oral surgery at about 4 months. His dentist said some missing teeth (and depending on which ones) in Havanese are nothing to be concerned about and very common. She said 42 teeth in small jaws, even though the teeth are small, seem to be too many. Henry is also missing a few.

we go back in a couple weeks to have his adult teeth assessed. Fingers crossed no further surgery is required to have them come in.

Thanks for the report. Very interesting. For a while after Shama's teeth cleaning and teeth removal, we were softening her kibble. Now she seems to want it dry again. Her mouth must be feeling good!
