The subject of toys made me think of a story about Twinkle when she was about a year old or so. When the toys are picked up they are put in a big dishpan under the stairs. The stairs are open with no risers so some of our dogs are uneasy enough that they don't go up them. Twinkle is one of those. Pam, Hanna, and I were sitting in the living room where these stairs are. Twinkle poked her nose in the toy box and looked at us. I said, " If you want a toy, get it." She did it several more times and looked at us. When she was sure she had our attention, she went to the bottom step, put her front feet up on it and looked at us. After checking to see that we were looking she slowly pointed her nose upstairs and looked over at us. Hanna said, "Oh, I know what she wants. I had her up in my room this morning and she left a toy up there." At hearing that, Twinkle understood what she said and started dancing the happy jig in circles. Hanna went up and got the toy for her and Twinkle was pleased that we were not too dumb to understand what she was talking about.
