Color changes?

I know Havanese can change colors but do they change drastically?
Piper is two now and has stayed the same color but over the last month or so I have noticed that some black seems to be infiltrating the white. I took some pictures. The black spot on on her back near the tail seems to be "growing" and on her white side, there are some very small areas of black hair. Could this be a color change and would it be so drastic from white to black? Would it happen all of a sudden at age 2?

I'm excited to see what happens!

Wow! I don't have the answer but it would be pretty wild to see a black Piper at the next playdate!

I hope Dale will read this thread because Cicero (black & white) has made a lot of changes. Our Abby is a sable who changed after young puppyhood - the pictures of her at about six weeks are the only early ones we saw until we got her at 8 mos. At six weeks she was a mix of black & cream but at 8 mos. she was cream with a lots of black hairs on her back that looked like a smoky haze at certain angles. Her ears were tipped with jet black and she had a wide streak of that same black in her tail. At age three (June) I noticed that the black in her ears was much lighter and the streak in her tail was almost completely gone! Now, just a few months later I'm noticing little black hairs growing on the top of her muzzle! That is just so weird to me.....lol My little grandchildren even asked me if I was sure that was Abby when we went to see them a few weeks ago!

Augie was black and tan as a puppy. His black parts were black black. Starting with his rear end, his under hair started turning lighter and lighter until now it is a pale gray or silver and it is inching forward until he now has these silvery gray hairs scattered throughout most of his coat. I am sort of expecting most of his black to lighten, but who knows. It seems these guys have a mind all their own when it comes to color.

Then, isn't there the Belton gene where the reverse happens, where the white areas on dogs will start getting the darker spots and get darker and darker. I am wondering if Piper might have that going on? Also, hopefully Dale will comment here, I am thinking that I recall reading where Cicero may have that gene.

This is so interesting-I have seen dogs lighten in color but didn't realize they could darken as well. Piper's AKC papers have her listed as a black parti but I think you are right Linda and she may have the belton gene (I've never even heard of that before!) I hope Dale will chime in but in the meantime I will do a forum search and see if I can find any pictures of Cicero's changes.

Thanks for the link Flynn, the pictures of the dogs with the Belton gene are amazing. I guess I could be in for some big changes.

Linda-I'll make sure Piper wears her bandana to the next playdate so everyone knows who she is!

Dale and Cicero are here!!!!! This guy does not look anything like the baby we brought home. I knew they went through changes but most get lighter or turn silver - but Cicero's white is what changed and it's been amazing to watch the color drift down the hair till I have a very different guy.

Here is a thread that is fun to read about the color changes in Havs - and you can see his baby pics when he started to change. I will try to get some new pics on soon. Enjoy.

Jack has an inch of dark grey roots. I think that when I take him to his 1st grooming next week, I will be coming home with a grey dog, not a black one.

It will be interesting. I plan on taking before and after pics.

Pam

Hey Dale and Cicero!
Sir Winston definitely has that ticking on his legs, etc., but so far is so very black he is blue and really white. I hope I see some changes and of course not sure how old he is. His hair on the lower back is dfinitely a different texture than the silky hair on the rest of his body..

Color change

All this is so interesting, I keep looking at Maddie lately and see alot more red in her black. And her tan is looking more gray to white I don't think she is going to have much tan at all after awhile. All have to change her AKC papers
