Flying American Airlines (Eagle)-Nervous

Hi everyone,

Hoping all of you with experience flying with your little Havs can help me out. I'm flying for the first time with Maggie on American Airlines via American Eagle. I'm wondering if anyone has flown on an American Eagle flight with their dog. Also, I have a Pets Go 2 carrier I purchased on Amazon. Even though their website states this carrier is 12" high, it is only 11" so I'm hoping this carrier will be ok. Maggie weighs a little over 12 pounds and she fits just fine in this carrier and is able to stand and turn around. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance from others who have flown with their dogs.

Also, didn't realize I would have to take her to the vet within 10 days of flying, and since I'm staying 2 weeks with my family, will have to take her to the vet there to get another certificate that she's ok to fly back home. This is all new to me, but it seems like I will be flying with her quite often in the future.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Linda, Maggie's Mom

We have flown from Massachusetts to California with Penelope on JetBlue.
She did just fine.
We brought all the paper work from the vet with us. I don’t know if regulations are different with each airline, but we did not have to go to vet 10 days before. We just needed to have up to date rabies, license and we brought copies of her vet records. Nobody from the airline even looked at those, but we bring them always!
We use the Sherpa carrier medium size and it was fine.
When we checked our bags, they weighed Penelope in the bag to make sure she and her carrier were under 20 pounds.
At the security check, we had to remove her and hold her while her carrier was X-rayed.
Then back in crate and she slept the whole way.
We fed her a very small amount of kibble early in the morning before our afternoon flight. She had water until about 2 hours before we left.
I was prepared to give her ice if she wanted it in flight but she slept the whole 6 hour flight.
I put a light blanket over her carrier to block sights and drafts.
We are taking a short flight with her this week as we head out for vacation.
Also, we had stress relief treats on hand. We didn’t have to use them as Penelope seemed pretty calm. But the vet said it would be fine if needed.
Just prep everything ahead of time and then relax as much as you can. Your pup will pick up on your energy.
