Crying my eyes out - UPDATE

Hi everyone.

First, I have to say a sincere thank you to each and every one of you who responded to my post. You really did help.

Monday and yesterday were very rough days for me. I didn't sleep much Monday night debating what to do. The breeder came up with another option which is a female from another litter who is only 2 weeks old and won't be ready to ship until mid-January. I went back and forth all night. Kept looking at the boys, but still wasn't sure.

FINALLY, I decided to wait for the female. Of course we have no idea what her personality will be like since she's only 2 weeks old but I'm going to take the gamble. I'm disappointed that I can't surprise my daughter with her puppy before Christmas but as someone said I will have this dog for 10-15 years and don't want to feel like I settled. I'm sure if I saw the male in person I would love him to pieces but since I had the choice I'm going to wait for what I had my heart set on. This new pup (I'm still going to name her Bella) has the same sire as the first one so they are half-sisters. Watch, she'll turn out to be a holy terror and you all will say "see, you should have picked the sweet little boy", lol.

My heart still breaks for my original pup. Please keep her in your prayers.

I will keep her in my prayers. I think you have a wonderful and caring breeder who is trying to do everything right. And don't worry about Bella, the second. If she turns out to be the sweet, loving baby you're longing for, we'll all be thrilled for you. If she turns out to be a holy terror, just change her name to Ruby and we can commiserate.

I'm really happy for you.

You can still surprise your daughter on Christmas morning though. Here's how...
go buy all the stuff you will need for your new pup. Wrap everything up individually and put it under the tree. Allow your DD to open the first present, maybe a blanket or something that doesn't scream dog, then a plain stainless steal bowl that will again leave her puzzled. She will be confused, but just smile and tell her it's part of a mystery she needs to solve. Keep giving her the doggy stuff to open, it won't be long before she suspects then guesses. Have the breeder email you a pic of the pup just before Christmas and print and frame it and give that to your DD as the last gift in the series along with a puppy calendar with the arrival date marked on it.

Thanks Geri,
I did that one year when we were going to Cuba shortly after Christmas and that was boys' main present. I wrapped up bathing suits, towels, sunglasses, and finally a travel brochure with a note.

Such happy news. I am sure you and your family will love your new female puppy. The saying is 'good things are worth waiting for'.

That's a great idea Trish. Unfortunately my daughter is 7 and this is what my day would be like:

7a.m. - Mom, when are we getting the dog?
7:15 a.m. - Mom, why do we have to wait so long for the dog?
7:30 a.m. - Mom, can't we get the dog now?
7:45 a.m. - Mom, can we just get a different dog that we can get now?
8:00 a.m. - Mom, why do we have to wait so long for the dog?

X 14 waking hours a day, X 7 days/week, X 6-8 weeks.

I love the idea but it just wouldn't work at my house. After 2 days I'd probably have a German Shepherd from the pound, lol.

A happy solution! I'm sure this Bella will be a sweet addition, too.
