Did I buy a good crate?

Hey gang,
So I went out and bought a bunch of stuff for Sammy...only two more sleeps now I bought the following as a crate and wanted to get your opinions as to whether you thought it was any good. I can totally return it if it sucks. It's super easy to set up and is totally portable. The only thing I see as a drawback is that it seems very dark inside as the windows are a heavy black mesh. Please offer your opinions. Here's a link to the product.

it looks like a very nice crate!
Has he been crate trained?
I do know that most Havs want to be able to SEE thier humans, so I might be a little concerned if he would be able to see you clearly?
Tillie has been in a wire crate at night since we brought her home, she doesn't LOVE it, cause well, she wants to be with us, but she doesn't cry at all, as long as we are in bed and she can SEE us.

SOOOO exciting, 2 more nights!!!!

I agree. Here are the crates I have. Most pups like to see all around.

No he hasn't been crate trained and apparently he sleeps in foster mom's bed. Once we get him, he will probably sleep on my son's bed (hopefully or my DS will be very sad), but I do want to crate train him for when we go out. I work from home and homeschool so there's usually someone here, so he probably wouldn't really use the crate that much, but I'd like him comfortable with it nonetheless. I thought of just making a crate myself out of those grid cubes that snap together. Do you know the one's I mean? They are 14" square and made of coated metal and go together with connectors. You can make shelving cubes out of them for the office, laundry room, etc. Anyway, I thought I could use those as it would be two grids long by one across and I could put his pillow on the bottom and then just drape a blanket over the top if he wants privacy. If the grid thing doesn't make sense, here's a pic of my guinea pig cage so you get the idea. You can sort of see the sides of the cage to get the idea anyway

Linda, that is the same crate we have for Tillie!

I would be concerned about the connectors for the snap together thing you are talking about, how tight are they?

What about getting an "x-pen"? Tillie started out in the x-pen during times when we couldn't watch her and we had a seperate place for night time sleep.

I'm sure everything will work itself out! A lot depends on how he has lived before and how he fits in with your family, you guys will work it out!! Just be patient with him and yourselves and it will all come together with time!!!

Linda,
I like the one from Petedge. How the heck do you guys get to buy stuff like this for 14 bucks. The same thing up here is like 60...sheesh!

You're probably right about the connectors TilliesMom. He could probably manage to work them off if he was real keen to.

I think I will take the one I bought back to the store and get one like what you guys have, although not for $14 LOL.

So then the next question is where should I keep the crate? In my son's room or the family room where my son usually lives or somewhere else?

Gosh...so much to learn

LOL, okay I just totally had to go to the pet edge website and check for myself... $14!??? that must be for the super tiny crate or something... right?
I have to say, I searched and bid for one on e-bay and got it for $30, felt like I got a deal! If you walked into Petco, Walmart or where ever they run close to $60... so don't feel to bad!!

and like I said, you guys will learn together, we all have! Just do your best, what works for you and Sammy and love him, that is what he really needs!
I would say to put the crate where ever it is close to you or who ever he is bonded most strongly with, so Sammy can see you.

I have the same kind of crate that Linda has. It's been great for all of them. I do agree though for leaving him during the day . . . or whenever, the ex-pen is also a good idea. BTW, I paid a lot more than $14 for mine.

Ya know, since Sammy is older do you really need a crate?

Since he isn't crate trained, maybe you'd be better off using an x pen. You can set it up as a square, rectangle or any shape that fits. You can put a bed, water, food, toys, pee pad in there. I always liked to have a pee pad in my xpen, just in case of an emergency. Set it up in the main area of the house. The place that's has the most activity. At night, he can just sleep in your sons bed.

ya, maybe I could forgo the crate altogether and do the playpen thing. He's really not going to be home alone that much anyway, but I'm just concerned because of electrical cords, stuff like that and the guinea pigs. If he's in a playpen and I put a pee pad down, will he know to use it though. He's currently trained to go outside.
