Eye Tearing Concern

Our 3 year old Bella has running eyes. This isn't unusual. Each morning I clean her eyes with a damp cloth. Lately, though, she's been needing the eye cleaning more. It's like her eye area looks damp.

Today she was getting her weekly bath and I washed her muzzle as usual, concentrating on the matted area from the runny eyes. But I saw small clumps of fur coming out when I rinsed--not strands but clumps.

I don't know what is going on. Last week I put some anitbiotic ointment on a red spot near her eye that showed up during a bath.

Can anyone help with information?

hi Nancy, to be safe ,I would have the vet look at her. Just one thing to look for ,could be ingrown eyelash. http://www.petmedsonline.org/eyelash...-for-dogs.html

Eye and ear infections unless you have an on going problem (mill dogs often have ear problems on and off all of their life and dogs like shih tzus and pugs have eye problems) you need to see a vet. Eyes can result in blindness and ear infections can lead to blindness and of course to the brain. Be care full.

Our vet thought Bella could have a bacterial infection setting in. She checked for ringworm but nothing showed up. Bella has antibiotics for a couple of weeks and we'll see how she is then. I use Chris Christensen every day shampoo for her weekly bath, you don't suppose that could irritate her? I will rinse her more carefully--if that's possible. Hopefully, this RX will fix it.

Glad to hear its not ringworm and the doctor is treating it in case of infection. Dogs get stuff in their eyes just like we do, they can't get if right out so it can bother the eye. I hope things clear up soon.

She got her bath yesterday and no hair loss--and her eyes aren't so runny. Maybe it was a bacterial infection.
