Advice Needed "Wife and Daughter Falling in Love With Havanese!"

Hello,
My name is John and my family has just been bitten and smitten by your wonderful breed!
Just a little background, so you can help guide me.
I'm a former AQHA Horse trainer with 2 world championships and 1 high point jumper to my credit.
I also have raised and trained 4 Blue-Heelers over the past 30 years as life-long companions.
After some extensive research, I have come to conclude that a Havanese
would be a perfect new addition to our family.

I, however, need some advice.
I know the importance of buying the right animal, so I want to make as certian as posible to make the right choice for my family.

I would like to find reputable breeders of Havanese Puppies on the East Coast.
We live in North East PA and are looking to make a purchase some time soon. I have no problem traveling, I'm used to it when we were showing horses.

I have scowarded the internet and this forum, but there is no advise like the kind you can receive from people who love and embrace this Breed.

Were not rich, but price is not a main concern. To some the initial cost of a Puppy can seem great. But I know well enough that it is a very, very small investment you make over the period of a dogs life. In addition, if health issues can be prevented by buying from the right Breeder, that is priceless for our family and the the dog itself.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance,
John

Hi John,
Welcome to the forum. I am heading to work or I would write more. Please check out the Delaware Valley Havanese club. That is the local havanese club in the tri state area. I will check back later to give more advice if you need it

Hi John and welcome. My daughter(Brady's Mom) and my sister-in-law both got their puppies from Diane at Woodlands Havanese in the Philly suburbs. They are absolutely wonderfull dogs! Diane is a member of the Delaware Valley Havanese Club. I got my Bacca from Yuppy Puppy in Florida at a year and a half years old. Janet flew him up and I met her in the airport. Bacca is wonderfull!! He is a product of Yuppy Puppy in Florida and Mylad in Canada. Both of them are good breeders as well!

Hi John, and welcome to the group. There are a number of people here who have gotten their babies from breeders in your area so I'll let them speak to the specific breeders. You're going about your search in exactly the right way and it will likely bring the perfect puppy into your life. One word of warning though. They're like potato chips. You can't have just one.

BTW, I live in New York but got my three from PrairiwindHavanese in S. Dakota.

Good luck in your search!

Research the breeders well and do not be in a hurry to get a puppy. The first 6 months of you getting him home will be intense with lots of training and potty breaks. Believe me, it will wear you out! It is just like having a newborn baby, then a toddler running around your house! Read the forum and you will soon find out who the breeders are, sometimes it takes a good six months of waiting for that pup.

You want to see what the home environment of your new pup....you want to see the parents, you want to make sure the pup is from a healthy line of Havs. Lots of research to do.

Thank you very much for all the information. I'm pursuing all the above suggestions.
The more I read, the more I becoming impressed with this breed and the people
who surround themselves with these dogs!!!

The Potato Chip comment does have me a little apprehensive.

Just kidding!!

The "Potato Chip" thing is true. I read the forums for a good while prior to getting Dexter and found out how much fun these guys have fun playing. I told my hubby, we will probably end up getting another Hav later....I think he thought I was kidding at the time.
